Whether you want to get an up-close look at sea creatures or kayak atop the calm water, Dana Point Harbor offers plenty of choices. The quaint beach town, nestled along the ocean and rocky cliffs, is a popular destination for people of every age. Among its most popular attractions is the Pilgrim. The full-size brig is a replica of the ship that Richard Henry Dana used to sail around Cape Horn in 1835. Families can go aboard the wooden vessel most Sundays and experience what life was like on the Pilgrim by raising sails and singing sea chanteys. Venture below the deck to see the tight quarters where the crew slept and ate. In the summer, several musical and dramatic theatrical performances are given aboard the brig. Be sure to check a calendar of events before you go, as the Pilgrim may be closed due to special programming. Another highlight of the area is the Ocean Institute. Nestled at the base of Dana Point's cliffs, this is a great place to take your family to learn about the ocean and its habitats. The institute offers individual aquariums, hands-on exhibits and demonstrations. While there are limited number of aquariums, the ones they do have are worth the visit. Be sure to check out the white jellyfish display. Dozens of translucent creatures glide through the water in a circular motion. Several touch tank stations give kids an opportunity to feel starfish, crabs and other creatures. They can also view microorganisms under a microscope. Another area has a big tank full of water, which simulates the movement of the ocean. Move a paddle up and down and create your own waves. Offerings also extend beyond the institute's walls. Catch a glimpse of a whale as it slowly emerges out of the water and then disappears again during a Marine Mammal Cruise. Cruises are offered most weekends and it's a sure bet you'll be greeted by dolphins and sea lions during your excursion. For another encountered with wildlife, try the tidepools. Found along the rocky shore of the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge, several salty pools form and become home to various shells and creatures, such as sea urchins, fish and crabs. The Ocean Institute offers tours or you can venture off on your own. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and layered clothing as the climate can be cool and the rocks slippery. For a different view of the sights, rent a kayak or a jet ski from Dana Point JetSki. With the ocean and harbor up against the cliffs and the green grass, it is a beautiful setting to paddle and get some exercise. For a more fast-paced adventure, hop on a jek ski and venture out into the ocean. Rentals are available by the hour. Or, bring your bikes along. Cement paths, which wind through the harbor, make for a pleasant and scenic ride. There are also lots of grassy areas to stop and enjoy a picnic. Or, grab a slice of pizza or an ice cream at Slice of New York located at Mariners Village. Dana Point Harbor is also known for its seafaring events. This month, the Festival of Whales returns. Held March 3-4 and March 10-11, the event celebrates the return of the once-endangered Gray Whales as they travel along the West Coast and head to Baja during their annual migration. Highlights include parades, a street fair, exhibits, activities and, of course, whale watching excursions. Tracy Bennett is OC Family Magazine's calendar coordinator. |
