Sleeping with the fish

Make a sleepover part of the family destination.

By Sandy BennettPublished: June, 2007

Families can visit popular destinations after hours this summer during an array of sleepover programs. From an action-packed night of fun that explores science to snoozing among the sharks, several options will be offered. Here is a look a five venues located close by that can be experienced during the evening hours – without the crowds.

Discovery Science Center
Santa Ana
Lie on a bed of nails, explore scientific principals and interact with 100 hands-on exhibits during Discovery Science Center’s Midnight Madness Camp-Ins. The program is offered on select Fridays, beginning at 7 p.m., and end at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. The minimum group size is eight youths (one adult chaperone for every eight youths is required). So round up some neighbors, extended family members or friends to join your clan. The cost is $35 per child and $25 per adult and includes a bedtime snack and continental breakfast.

Aquarium of the Pacific
Long Beach
Discover ocean critters through an array of hands-on activities and exhibits that showcase them in their natural habitats at the Aquarium of the Pacific’s Family Sleepover program. Highlights include a Behind the Scenes tour, an opportunity to feed some of the aquarium’s tropical fish and a family scavenger hunt. Guests will also create a souvenir T-shirt to take home. The overnight program includes a pizza dinner, snack and cereal breakfast. The next overnight program will be offered July 20. Check-in is at 5 p.m. and the program ends at 7 a.m. the next morning. Cost: $60 per person.

Wild Animal Park

The park’s popular Roar & Snore sleepovers offer several themes to choose from.

Family Nights, for example, is designed for families with children ages 4 and up and features a variety of special activities that are geared for children. Offerings include  an after-hours look at the wild life, guided walks and animal encounters. All programs offer three tent options. Summer prices begin at $109 per child and $129 per adult; park admission is also required.

New for 2007 is the park’s Photo Sleepover adventure for adults and teens ages 16 and older. Guests will have the opportunity to take pictures in several major areas of the park in a relaxed, non-crowded environment with a Zoological Society of San Diego award-winning staff photographer. Prices begin at $129 per person; park admission is also required.
