S. Charles Decker, father of two children with autism, has penned "Zack the Prairie Dog" in an effort to promote awareness about the disorder. ![]() ![]() The story follows Zack, a clever, red-haired daschund, and Cody, a prairie dog with autism, who are both unique and not always accepted by their peers. But, they are able to form a lifelong friendship and change the way others perceive them. While the book offers a great message, it also runs pretty long and at times can feel a bit much, especially for younger readers. I think the theme could have been established much quicker, but, it's still an interesting concept for promoting awareness about the disorder. It shows kiddies that everyone is different, special and unique in his or her own way. ![]() Kristen Schott is OC Family's children's book editor.
