Borders launches Double Dog Dare Reading Challenge

By Kristen SchottPublished: May, 2010

Summer is coming up quick, which means long days, beach-going weather, outdoor barbecues – and the difficult task of keeping your kids reading when they're not in school.

That's why Borders is launching a Double Dog Dare Reading Challenge (love the name!) nationwide at all its stores starting today.

Basically, children ages 12 and under can read any 10 books they want, and they'll get one book free from Borders. All they have to do is keep track of the titles on the Borders Summer Reading Challenge form, have a parent or guardian sign it and turn it in.

You can find the form online, or pick it up at your local Borders or Waldenbooks shop. The books kiddies read do not need to be purchased at Borders; that means you can pick up stories at local libraries, from your own selection or borrow titles from a friend. It really doesn't matter.

Free book titles include "Ramona the Brave" by Beverly Clearly (one of my all-time favorites) or "My Weird School No. 1: Ms. Daisy is Crazy!" by Dan Gutman, among other selections.

The best part? You can complete the challenge AS MANY TIMES AS YOU WANT!

The competition runs through Aug. 30.

I can't even tell you how excited I am about this challenge. If I were under 12, I would participate. (Again, I was the kid who, during summer months, would bring home 50 books every few weeks from the library and read, read, read in the summer sunshine.)

Why don't companies do this for adults? Hint, hint, Borders.

Readers Feedback:

Brilliant. All large companies should do this. I am a teacher in public education and I see very low reading scores that correlate to socio economic status. THANK YOU for filling the gap!
