![]() Courtesy of Fotolia The local library currently has about 2,895 kiddies enrolled in its SummerREAD program – and that's up 20 percent from last year. How exciting! This is positive to hear during the summer, when kids generally read less. I give applause to those who support these programs, the parents who get their kids involved – and the children who are reading all those stories. If YOUR kids haven't signed up yet, I suggest you do so now. There's still a few weeks left – the program runs through Aug. 5. Basically, to participate in the free program, dubbed Make a Splash, Read!, infants and kids up to age 12 must keep track of the books they've read – or those that have been read to them – by registering for the program online or at the library. And, for those who complete the program with 12 hours of reading under their belts, there's a special SummerREAD Stars Celebration on Aug. 10 at the Norman P. Murray Community Center. The day will feature a live show from the Jumbo Shrimp Circus, face-painting, clowns and a drawing, among other offerings.
