It's been 30 years since the beloved character Spot bounded into the lives of preschoolers – and he continues to make an impression on readers today. (Read on for a chance to win a Spot package!) ![]() Eric Hill's "Where's Spot?" debuted in 1980 (in dog years, Spot would be 210!) and has since then sold 50 million copies in 60 languages throughout 100 countries. ![]() Talk about a legacy – but it's a great book and definitely deserves all the acclaim it's garnered over the years. Hill, who was born in 1927, first used the "lift-the-flap" format – and the idea took off and can be found in a massive number of children's books today. ![]() Spot has been instrumental in helping kids develop early-reading skills, with books such as "Spot's First Words," "Spot's Colors, Shapes, and Numbers" and "Spot Goes to School" (and there's plenty more). ![]() To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Penguin Books is holding a number of events starting this month and lasting throughout the year (lucky dog – we only celebrate my birthday for a day!). Though there's not anything right now planned locally, you and your kiddies should definitely plan a day to trek up to L.A. for the festivities. On April 24-25, Spot will be at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, which is held at UCLA. Or, head up to Pasadena on April 27. An event is being held at Vroman's Bookstore Hastings Ranch, which is located at 3729 E. Foothill. Can't make it to either of those? Well, be sure to check out funwithspot.com/us/ The site offers opportunities for parents and kids to read about Hill and create a new variation on the Spot story. Plus, if your kiddie's got a birthday coming up, there's some great suggestions for planning Spot-themed parties. GIVEAWAY: If your kiddies are huge Spot fans, then enter to win this "Where's Spot?" 30th Anniversary Prize Package, which includes a "Where's Spot?" book, a DVD and a Spot plush toy!
