A story about meeting in the middle

'Sir Lofty and Sir Tubb' offers an age-old lesson

By Kristen SchottPublished: June, 2010

Learning to share can often be a tough lesson to teach children, but Binette Schroeder's book "Sir Lofty & Sir Tubb" finds a way to showcase the importance of this value in an easy way for kiddies.

The book, which is published by NorthSouth, follows Sir Lofty and Sir Tubb – and their wives – as they coexist in perfect peace in their two castles. They've let the wall fall down between their homes, and they often gather for dinner.

But, a beautiful, perfect flower sparks envy and greed between the two families, as the wives argue over who fertilized – or watered it – first.

The story climaxes when their greed causes them to destroy the one item that broke up their friendship.

The story ends with a wonderful compromise that showcases the idea that a little bit of thought, humility, prudence and charity helps to solidify friendship.

The text is humorous and easy to read, and it offers ample opportunity for discussion with children. In addition, it teaches children to look out for certain characters, words and phrases – c'mon, Sir Lofty is tall and Sir Tubb is stocky. It's funny and teaches kids new words.

Plus, the images are hilarious and powerful; they help to solidify the message of sharing the author is imparting on the reader.

I suggest you pick up the book today for some educational summer reading.
