I love a good parody for kids

'Where the Mild Things Are' by Maurice Send-up

By Kristen SchottPublished: April, 2010

Everyone loves "Where the Wild Things Are." There's no denying that. It's an unforgettable classic that children and parents will want to read again and again – forever.

BUT WAIT. There's a parody of the book, too (I'm so excited, my fingertips are jumping with joy as I write this.)

"Where the Mild Things Are," by Maurice Send-up, illustrated by Bonnie Leick and published by Simon & Schuster is a "very meek parody" of the book – and it's just hilarious.

The book follows Mog, a monster who's not quite as appalling as the others on the island. In fact, he's a bit dull (and this is where it gets interesting). His parents punish him for playing with his food (a kitten) and send him to his room, where he embarks – with a little magic – on a journey to, yup, you guessed it, Dullsville.

Oh my – everything about this story is a crack-up, and it's great for kids – and their parents, who may understand it a tad more.

A story that offers a good dose of wit is always appreciated in the children's literature circle (at least by me), so I give this book a two thumbs up for brilliance.

No detail is forgotten: For example, the book is the winner of the 2009 Most Ridiculous Picture Book Parody of the Year.

And here's a look at the amazing creators ...

Maurice Send-up is an author, illustrator, decorator, operator, bail jumper and guy who eats things for money at the circus. He is the author of more than 700, none published. He shares a one-bedroom apartment with 58 cats, whom he thinks are people. Maurice currently lives in Los Angeles.

Bonnie Leick has illustrated everything from wolf-like girls to secret-agent cockroaches. In "Where the Mild Things Are," she drew one of her favorite subject matters – monsters. Bonnie lives in Milwaukee, Wis. Visit her at bonnieleick.com.

I can't make you love this book like I do, but I sure hope I've influenced you to at least pick it up and see what it's all about.
