My co-worker Debbie and her 7-year-old son Jake are big readers – so much so, in fact, that she's offered me quite a few good books to review on "Storytime." (And I have to thank her for introducing me to the "Miss Spider" series, which you and your children should check out if you haven't yet.) Debbie and I were talking the other day about our mutual obsession with kiddie books – "I'll never stop loving them," she quipped – when she started telling me that Jake wrote a story, all by himself. And we've got reading – and Debbie, of course – to thank for it. So, here's Jake's story. I hope you enjoy this: I certainly did. 'The Turtle' by Jake Once upon a time there lived a turtle who had no friends because there were no more turtles in the ocean. He was so sad. He wished that he could have friends to play with, so he went above the ocean and found out that all the turtles were pets! Now he had to find a little boy or girl on the beach that would take him home and make him a pet. Then he looked on the shore and found a boy named Jake. He already had 3 boy turtles and 6 girl turtles. Jake took all the turtles home and put them in a tank. The tank was decorated so beautifully. It had wallpaper and deep sea rocks that were very colorful. They all lived happily ever after. The end. Congrats, Jake! And Debbie, you might just have a future author on your hands! Do you have little reader-writers on your hands, too? Then I suggest you take part in the PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest from KOCE-TV, which is accepting entries until March 15. The platform's goals is to "encourage, challenge and reward effort," and the top 12 winners get to compete nationally. What a great way to get kiddies writing – and keep them reading. ![]() Kristen Schott is OC Family's children's book editor.
