Bedtime stories

Do you create a tale to put the kids to sleep?

By Kristen SchottPublished: June, 2010

When you put your kids to bed, do you make up a story or read them one – or a little of both?

A recent study commissioned by SleepBetter.org and conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs shows that while 17 percent of parents polled think the all-time best bedtime book is "Goodnight Moon," by Margaret Wise Brown, 35 percent of parents with kids under 7 say their children prefer when mom or dad make up their own stories.

And 74 percent of parents with children under 7 said they do create their own bedtime tales – I love it!

Not only does this showcase the need for creativity among all ages, but I think it helps children and parents to connect even more over the joy of reading and imagination. And, kids learn through example, so after mom or dad spins a story, it's a good idea to see if they can come up with one on their own, too.

So cool. What a great way to spark innovation among children.

On that note, be sure to check out this week's 'Storytime." I'm bringing you a few books that help to boost creativity in young ones, starting with "My Best Friend is as Sharp as a Pencil," which focuses on similes, comparisons and art.

Be sure to watch my review here!

And here's a few more interesting facts from the survey:

• America's all-time favorite books, both parents and nonparents, are "Goodnight Moon," followed by "Green Eggs and Ham," "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "I'll Love You Forever," "Cinderella" and "Where the Wild Things Are.
• 84 percent of parents let kids pick their books to read.
• 46 percent of parents say that bedtime stories are most common, winning out over other nightly activities.
• Bedtime stories were a tradition among 52 percent of respondents when they were growing up.
