Ever heard of Dustpan, Texas?

'Diamond Jim Dandy and the Sheriff' is a rattlin' story

By Kristen SchottPublished: May, 2010

If you're looking for a fun story for your kiddies, then check out "Diamond Jim Dandy and the Sheriff," by Sarah Burell and illustrated by Bryan Langdo.

The book, which is published by Sterling, takes place in the sleepy town of Dustpan, Texas, where "nothing exciting ever happened."

Of course, that only lasts for the first few pages, because the entrance of a rattlesnake shakes up the otherwise dull town (and it's really dull: the sheriff is a babysitter, spending his crime-fighting time watching baby Idie Mae instead).

The snake charms the town with his talents, but the sheriff still isn't impressed, until the rattler manages to save the day.

It's a fun story that turns the idea of the rattlesnake on its head, and it'll make kids giggle and laugh along with Diamond Jim Dandy's antics. Plus, the illustrations are downright eye-catching.

But beware: Not all rattlers are like this snake.
