Why do kids have all the fun?

Read in the children's section at your local bookstore

Have you noticed that when you enter a children's section at a bookseller, it's like visiting a different world?

I have – I spent a few hours in the Barnes & Noble at Bella Terra in Huntington Beach over the weekend, and let me tell you, I wish I was a child again.

Everything is bright, colorful and friendly, and books practically jump off the shelves at you.

Turn around and look at the rest of the store, and everything else is ... so mature.

Sometimes, I think bookshops should make the whole space as fun as a kiddie area is. Children can laugh and play, sitting in beanbag chairs with their parents, sharing stories with one another. It's magical.

Could you imagine that vibe throughout the bookstore? It'd be kind of fun – at least for a little while.

After spending my afternoon browsing through children's books, doing some research on America-themed books – you'll see those in the upcoming July issue – I felt renewed, refreshed.

And I can't wait to do kiddie-book research next month.
