On Wednesday, I took a trip to the Children and Families Commission of Orange County's literacy booth at the OC Fair to read to some kiddies and further promote a love of books.
The commission has held this booth at the fair for the past three summers, and it's a big hit. Whether it's the oversize books, or the interactive storytimes, or reading tips for parents and kids, it's a fun place to stop and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the fair.
Located in the Promenade building, the booth offers plenty of books for children to enjoy with volunteer readers, parents and even one another. Kids and parents can cozy up on the beanbag chairs to hear tales such as "Where the Wild Things Are" or "The Cat in the Hat."
I read "Eight Silly Monkeys" by Steve Haskamp, as well as "The Fire Engine Book," a Little Golden Book, to about eight kids. Check out my video here:
Of course, while you're at the fair with your children, you'll want to check out all the fun rides, entertainment, activities – and the fried food – but I urge you to stop by the literacy booth to keep your kids reading during the summer.
The booth is open through Aug. 15.
Kristen Schott is OC Family's children's book editor. Be sure to check out "Storytime," my video book reviews, for more fun facts about stories you and your kiddies must read.
