Storytime blog: Calling all book-lovers

Take part in some of these reading-themed adventures

By Kristen SchottPublished: April, 2010

Today, I want to take a few minutes to draw your attention to some book-related happenings occurring around Southern California – and to shamelessly self-promote my book reviews.

Let's start with a look at some interesting and fun activities for local readers:

The Mission Viejo Library is offering teen readers the chance to interview the best-selling author of "The Princess Diaries," a runaway hit that is currently being published in nearly 40 countries, on April 22.

The library is sponsoring the contest, which calls for children between the ages of 13 and 18 to describe in 150 words or less how much they love the author's books. Photos are also encouraged.

The interview will be filmed and posted on Mission Viejo's YouTube channel (how cool!). Entry forms are available at cmvl.org or at the library's reference desk. Entries can be submitted to atran@cityofmissionviejo.org. Your teen must submit by 9 p.m. on April 18!

And, Pretend City Children's Museum in Irvine is launching a number of programs to get kids reading:

The destination is featuring Book Swap Beginnings through April 11. Each new or gently used selection will earn a ticket that can be used during the Week of the Young Child, taking place from April 12-16. The book-swap ticket can be redeemed with paid museum admission for new stories to discover.

On April 14, the museum will host a "Reading Difficulties Parent Workshop," which will offer information on how children learn to read, as well as tips for making the process easier. Registration is required; e-mail classes@pretendcity.org by April 9.

Now, I want to draw your attention to my "Storytime" online video book reviews. We took a look back at some of my favorite reviews for the last few months, and now I'm plunging ahead with more new titles for you to share with your children or students.

I started this week with a look at "Just How Long Can a Long String Be" and "Little Blue."

Click here to see what they're all about.

Also: If you haven't had an opportunity to check out my online book reviews that coincide with the April issue of the magazine, click here. There are some dazzling snuggle-themed stories in there, including "All the World," a visually astounding tale about the connections among the people of the world, and "The Heart and the Bottle," a touching, powerful book for children 4 and up.

So ... why did I tell you all this? Because I want you and your kiddies to get EXCITED to read.
