Ask anyone you know, and there's a good chance they have read and love "Are You My Mother?" by P.D. Eastman. Seriously – I'm not joking. Last week, I read it to a class of first-graders, and comments such as "That's a good book!" or "We read that every night," or "That makes mommy cry!" were prevalent. The teacher later told me that she loves the book – it's a favorite with her own children. My mom still remembers how often I made her read it to me. And she can still quote it. My boyfriend – who is by no means a reader – picked it up off of my desk and began thumbing through it. "I used to love this book," he said. I was nearly moved to tears when it arrived in a box on my desk a few weeks ago, and I had to dedicate a good amount of time to remembering my favorite illustrations and lines in the book. And so on. This is probably why Random House has released a special 50th anniversary party edition of the classic. The limited-edition book comes with a special foil-cover. Still – it's fun to read with your children whether or not you have the party edition. The book, which was originally published in 1960, follows a baby bird that wants to find his mother. He just doesn't know what she looks like – and he comes across a number of animals (and other objects) that he thinks are mommy. Of course they aren't, and children can't help but giggle, gasp and hope along with the characters in the story. It's a great tale with an unforgettable line: "Are you my mother?" And the story ensures that your children will not forget their own mother. There are books, and then there are books. And this one reigns supreme – for the next generation of readers.
