![]() Fueled by Diet Coke, a burning need for attention, and an ardent desire to show off Orange County's awesomeness, Suzanne Broughton writes her blog, "Alive in Wonderland." She lives with her devilishly handsome husband and two exceptionally fine kids behind a heavily guarded, yet perfectly landscaped, gate in Irvine. 30 random things about Suz: 1. Her friends call her Suz. 2. She cried unabashedly when she had a list published on McSweeney's: Easy Listening Songs from the '70s rewritten by the artists after they had kids. 3. She has an irrational, but not completely unfounded, fear of vans. White unmarked vans are particularly worrisome. Watch video about that here. 4. Every time she watches the 2007 Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup she cries like most girls cry at the end of the movie "Beaches." 5. She is a self-described tragic and disgraceful cook. Thankfully her friends and family have decided to embrace this truth as cute and quirky. 6. She attended charm school at Montgomery Wards in Huntington Beach when she was a young girl. She can still walk, sit down and cross her legs with a book perched on her head: Which has proven to be largely unuseful in her adult life. Read about my charm school days here. 7. Her New Year's resolution this year is, "Give twice. Take once." 8. She is an amateur photographer, but that didn't stop her from starting the website Orange County Daily Photo. "Seven Photographers. Seven perspectives of O.C. One photo a day." 9. She has her own reserve of Snail Jokes that she can tell whenever asked – which honestly, she is NEVER asked. 10. She'd rather eat a bowl of bees than a bowl of peas. 11. Suz can't stop herself from smiling when in an uncomfortable or overly serious situation. Which has lead to some pretty heated conversations which usually include phrases like, "Is this all a big joke to you?" or with accusations of "giving mixed messages." 12. She is an excellent parallel parker and has an uncanny knack of guessing what time it is any time of the day or night. 13. She failed miserably at making her husband's birthday cake, but he was fine with it (see # 5). Read the "Earthquake Cake" here. 14. Giving her Creme Brulee blow torches, expensive bottles of Saffron threads, and bunt pans for her birthday was funny the first couple of times but now is just cruel. (See #5, again.) 15. She's addicted to Lip Smackers, still wears Love's Baby Soft, and likes to roller skate to Earth, Wind and Fire. 16. She worked at Ruby's for three years while going to college. She loved being a Ruby's waitress because it incorporated three of her favorite things: 1) being bossy 2) red lipstick, and 3) chatting with strangers. 17. She's slightly obsessed with Mr. Darcy. 18. She broke up with her 11th-grade boyfriend once she saw him in his Farrell's uniform. 19. Suz had to flirt unabashedly with her (now) husband to get him to ask her out. He was a hot commodity in the brutal, sometimes confusing, San Francisco singles market. 20. Mary Tyler Moore was her idol growing up. 21. Her favorite moment in the day is when she sees her kids for the first time in the morning. She still can't believe how blessed she is to have them. 22. Her son is named after her stepdad. Her daughter is named after two of the three Bronte sisters. 23. Suz has a theory that biscotti is a mafia-backed baked good because she hasn't ever met anyone who likes them, yet they are everywhere. 24. She is 100% Mac. 25. Small Elizabethan shoes, tuna melts and clowns creep her out...oh, and that Twilight Zone with William Shatner when he sees the monster on the wing of the plane. 26. You can email Suz at sbroughton@churmmedia.com. She'd love that. 27. When she was nine-years-old her older brothers hung her Holly Hobbie doll in a noose from the ceiling light in her room. She let out a scream of pure terror when she saw it. If she thinks about it she can still see her hanging there. Besides that, her brothers were pretty kind to her. 28. She coined the word "tangenting." Which is really just a clever way of masking her undiagnosed adult onset ADD. 29. Read her personal blog here. You can follow Suz on Twitter. Watch her videos on YouTube. Be her friend on facebook. Join her on Flickr or listen to her music station on Blip.FM. 30. She can be a little self-involved sometimes. |
