Introduce your child to seafood

If they turn their noses up at trout, hook 'em with these fishy recipes

 Published: May, 2009

Even though we’ve all heard fish is good for you and part of a well-balanced diet, it’s not always the most appealing food option to your children. So how do you get your kids to develop healthier eating habits and try something they tend to turn their noses away from?

Joe’s Crab Shack, with locations in Garden Grove and Newport Beach, offers the following tips on getting your kids to try seafood:

Experiment with your lil’ mates

Introduce seafood slowly and with yummy flavors kids can’t resist, such as with butter or melted cheese, and try with less intimidating dishes from the kid’s menu, like one of our faves: popcorn shrimp.  Whether at home or eating out, play around with crab, shrimp or fish in a variety of familiar entrees, such as with pasta, on a hamburger bun or in a taco shell.

Don’t throw in the towel

If your kids don’t like a particular seafood, it’s not the end of the world.  Give them a chance to try a variety of seafood as kids’ tastes may vary depending on how “fishy” the meal tastes.  Once they’re over the fear of a new seafood item, you can introduce them to an assortment of seasonings and sauces for the fish.

Make it creative and exciting

Joe’s provides an environment for kids where seafood is fun!  When in your own kitchen, let your kids choose what fish they want to try and involve them in the cooking process.  You can try different shapes and sizes, as well as making fun designs and faces on the seafood with spices and sauces.

Try finger-food fun

Let’s face it – eating is way more fun when you get a little messy.  Let your kids use their hands, strap on a bib, and have a good ole time chowin’ down on their tasty seafood selection.  Just because you’re an “adult” doesn’t mean you can’t strap on a bib and have some fun too.  Don’t worry about the mess…It’s all about the experience.

With patio-perfect summer weather approaching, it’s a great time to introduce seafood, whether you’re on vacation or just need one.
