School district to use funds to upgrade classrooms and programs

Irvine Public Schools Foundation receives two new grants

by Kirsti CorreaPublished: September, 2011

In these difficult times for educational programs and school districts, the Irvine Public Schools Foundation will be able to guarantee that students in the Irvine Unified School District will receive necessary academic support in upcoming years. Last month, the foundation was named as a recipient of grants from Google, Inc. and Montessori International.

“We are honored to welcome Google, Inc. and Montessori International as our newest corporate partners,” said IPSF CEO Neda Zaengle.  “Their generous grants to IPSF will make a difference to the over 27,000 students in IUSD.”

As more emphasis is placed on the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs, IPSF plans to use Google’s grant to provide science materials and supplies to IUSD middle and high schools.

“Google believes that investing in [STEM] education programs is crucial to a student’s future success in the workforce,” said Community & Government Affairs Manager Veronica Bell. “We are pleased that our donation will provide Irvine students with additional opportunities in this critical area.”

ISPF will also be able to fulfill three key initiatives through funding from Montesorri International.

“Irvine Public Schools Foundation deserves enormous credit for the work it is doing on behalf of Irvine students and we are glad to be part of their efforts,” said President of Montessori International Betty Miller.

In order for students to get the most out of their education and time spent in school, part of the funds will be used to implement the web-based counseling program, Naviance. It will allow students to create an individualized four-year academic plan.

The rest of the funds will be allocated for technology related equipment and classroom grants for IUSD’s Montessori and Alternative Program for Academically Accelerated Students (APAAS) programs.

“The Irvine Unified School District would like to thank Google, Inc. and Montessori International for making such generous and worthwhile investments in education,” said IUSD Superintendent Terry L. Walker. “In these challenging economic times, every penny counts, and we are incredibly fortunate to receive grant funding for valuable educational opportunities through IPSF.”
