Local startup delivers the world’s first self-heating stuffed animal

O.C. mom's idea for warm bear hugs

Nicole LyonsPublished: February, 2012

Inspired by a Yorkshire Terrier named “Scout” Kimberli Colbert developed the first-ever self heating stuffed teddy bear. The bear may not have a brain, but the Warm & Fuzzys stuffed animal does have a heart that brings soothing comfort to children.

Colbert, a full-time mom of two little girls, and the four-legged female dog, Scout wanted to recreate the feeling of a furry, cuddly animal curled up next to someone. The Warm & Fuzzys teddy bear offers the children more than a stuffed buddy, but a warm-hearted companion.

Besides the comforting feeling of the stuffed animal, the heat coming from its heart pack provides cozy, soothing effect. Similar to cool pack or glow sticks, the heart is activated by pressing down on a metal disc. Once the disc is pressed the red liquid turns into crystals and reaches 130 degrees.  The heart heat packs are reusable once boiled in a towel for five minutes and the pack is completely clear. Replacement packs are available for purchase as well.

And if a heart breaks it will not cause damage to children or pets. The heart-made solutions is edible (but not recommended for consumption) as it is made of distilled water, non-toxic, food grade Sodium Acetate (a type of salt) and is used as a food preservative.

So far the response from the public has been outstanding says Colbert. Both parents and children are loving the new update given to the teddy. However, Colbert says she cannot take all the credit, for managing both home and the business. It's a team effort.

"I can gladly take credit for the daily operations of my household which is a challenge with a 4 and 6 year old.  As for the operations of Warm & Fuzzys, that is truly a team effort where I lean on friends and family for nearly every aspect of the business."
