A Massachusetts mom sells her chalk designs on Etsy
From glittery cupcakes to tractors, you can get it made in chalk. In fact, if you can’t find what you are looking for on the The Chalk Shop website, it can be custom made. The Etsy-based business sells a selection of themed designs for weddings, birthday parties, baby showers and any other event you were.
Mel Carota of Lowell, Massachusetts, the creator of The Chalk Shop, got her inspiration to start the company because of her now 4-year-old daughter’s love of chalk at 18 months. Carota learned how to make chalk into fun shapes and colors. She now features 26 designs on her website. And the crazy part is that she runs The Chalk Shop in addition to working a 50-hour week and being a mom. She hopes to one day make it her full time gig.
Each month Carota makes by hand about 1,800 pieces of chalk. Currently the most popular shapes on her website are LEGO’s, popsicles, bees, rainbows and carnival/circus themes.
Besides for sidewalk art, chalk is fun to use for a variety of other activities. For instance, Carota suggested using it as paint: draw on a piece of paper and then take a paintbrush, dip it in water and see the picture turn into a watercolor. It can also be used to prevent your silver jewelry from tarnishing. Did you know that?
“Chalk has so many possibilities and the best part is it washes right off and you can start creating all over again,” said Carota.
New themes coming down the line include bow chalk for Lalaloopsy-inspired birthdays and this spring Carota plans to release her sidewalk paint.
For a set of 6-themed chalks the average cost is $9, so it’s about $1.50 per piece. Carota also recently added chalk hearts packaged with a “Be My Valentine” message in time for the Feb. 14 holiday.
