![]() As the hosts of ABC’s “The View” Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd share a common bond: motherhood. As mothers (and one grandmother) of varying ages and backgrounds they express their thoughts and experiences with parenting, often clashing and sometimes agreeing on their individual approach to rearing kids in an ever-changing world. Here’s an assortment of their “Pearls of Parenting Wisdom”: Sherri Shepherd “I call them my ‘little boys on ice’” -Sherri Shepherd on her four frozen male embryos “A lot of my friends say you have to stop putting that label of ‘developmental delays’ on your son. You have to raise him like he’s normal because (that label) lowers your expectations.” -Sherri Shepherd discussing her four-year-old son Jeffrey “You’ve got to teach a kid, in life, everybody doesn’t win.” -Sherri Shepherd on life lesson for kids “I think to praise a child. Jeffrey is going through this thing where he finally got potty trained. When he does No. 2 he’s like mommy, mommy, look, and I go whoo-hoo!” -Sherri Shepherd on potty training Whoopi Goldberg “She (my mother) said I realize that some children absolutely know the things that they don’t want and you have to be respectful of that and she said I kept trying to make you do something that I wanted you to do knowing full on that you had already established that this was not going to happen, so why did I put myself through that? -Whoopi Goldberg explains what her mother realized after trying to force her to consume eggs as a child “Kids really do know the things that they want to eat and the things that they’ll try if you don’t push them” -Whoopi Goldberg on respecting your child’s eating habits “Kids are much smarter than we give them credit for” -Whoopi Goldberg on kids eating habits “Are you out of your mind? Parents don’t have enough time to hang with their kids now. What do you think is going to happen if you make a 12-month school year? -Whoopi Goldberg to President Barack Obama on his proposal for a longer school year “September. Start school. June, you get out. Mommy and Daddy have to find a way, as our parents did, to deal with the fact that you’ve got a little time off. This is part of raising children. Parents have got to relearn how to engage their children” -Whoopi Goldberg on spending time with your children “I'm sorry. Dodge ball and Volley ball where you lost and you won. I don’t understand why children are not allowed to have those experiences” -Whoopi Goldberg on building children’s self-esteem Joy Behar “I'll tell you what my mother used to do. I couldn’t eat eggs. She would put it in the malted in the morning and I didn’t know it was in there. She’d say ‘Oh, I didn’t put eggs in anything.’ She’d lie to me basically and I’d say ‘thank you mommy’ and then I saw the shells in the garbage and had a fit and then I would never eat eggs again. I wanted the F.B.I. to start investigating her (my mother)” -Joy Behar humorously recounts how her mother tricked her into eating eggs as a child “Talk about cutting back time at home with your parents. The homework is hours for these kids. That (the homework) needs to be cut back” -Joy Behar on time management for children “The truth is that the process really is better than the end game. That’s something that takes years to figure out so children need to be told that it’s really making the clay and putting it together that’s the fun and great part of life” -Joy Behar on life lessons for kids |
