Get a Job!

For teens, summer employment season arrives.

By Jaclyn Hong Published: May, 2005

School is almost over, and the sun is finally out. The smell of sunscreen lotion fills the air, and Orange County’s beaches are beckoning you to come in.

Yes, summer has finally arrived. It’s the perfect time of year for teenagers all over Southern California to finally…get a job.

But before protesting against your parents’ demand to find a job, canceling your summer plans or imagining yourself in front of a sizzling grill flipping meat patties, picture doing something enjoyable for the next three months, and getting paid for it.

Not all summer jobs require teens to stand for hours at a department store folding clothes, or memorizing endless lists of a restaurant’s specials. Whoever said working during the summer couldn’t be fun or beneficial?

Teenagers in search of earning extra money to add to their meager allowances or to help pay for a car or college should look beyond the average jobs at the mall. With enough research and looking around, anyone is bound to find a tolerable job that allows students to do something they are interested in.

For example, every summer, beaches and community pools are in a desperate need of swim instructors and lifeguards. If you meet the job requirements and fill out an application early enough, who can complain about getting paid to be in the water?

This past summer, I interned for five weeks at the Orange County Register, where I helped staff writers write briefs and collect information for their articles. Not only did I gain experience in the professional journalism field, but I confirmed my decision to major in journalism in college. After my internship, I was also offered the opportunity to get paid to continue helping my internship mentors at the Orange County Register.

However, if there do not seem to be any jobs that match your interests, look for the different benefits jobs may offer. Although working at an amusement park may not be as exciting as going to Disneyland or Knott’s Berry Farm as a customer, at least as an amusement park employee, one can get discounts or free park passes. The same goes for those who work at movie theaters or places that offer discounts or free items and membership.

In addition to getting more out of a job than some extra cash, teenagers should remember that their entire summer should not be dedicated to working. The summer provides students with enough free time to spend with friends and family. In addition, if students are interested in visiting colleges or attending summer programs or camps, they should give themselves enough time to do so.

Teenagers should not forget that despite having to work a few hours, the summer is still a time for everyone to enjoy the weather, relax and have fun.
