Instead of unhidden dangers, toll road advocates claim there are safety benefits of taking road less traveled.

At any one time, there are more than 32 million drivers on the road in California and in 2009, there were 3,081 fatalities on state roadways according to the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). What happens when you have an accident? Emergency Responders are called to assist.

On average it takes eight minutes for help to arrive on the scene of an accident in California; however this time can be heavily impacted by traffic and congestion on highways, such as during busy commute times on Interstate 5.

Those traveling from Orange County to the Inland Empire, or vice versa, can breathe a little easier when traveling on the 91 Express Lanes. The 91 Express Lanes provides a roadside assistance team that operates from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends and responds in less than seven minutes.

The service includes a freeway patrol, a traffic operation center and routine maintenance. Since 2007, there have been 53 percent more accidents on the main lanes versus the 91 Express Lanes. In addition, the 91 Express Lanes and other toll roads offer emergency responders a faster route to reach accidents on other highways in the region.

Overall safety on congested freeways roads is a huge concern, especially for parents of first time drivers. Does your driver know what to do when their tire blows out or they are involved in an accident? A highway roadside assistance team can help.

These safety features and fast response time, coupled with less congestion, make toll roads one of the safest places to break down. These benefits can provide some peace of mind to worried parents and perhaps offset possible concerns about additional costs associated with toll road use.

However, toll roads are only part of the complex highway system in Southern California, the roadside assistance team at the 91 Express Lanes offers the following tips to drivers for managing any roadside emergency situation:

1. Remain calm
2. If possible, attempt to pull over near a designated Call Box to be directly connected with a service patrol representative
3. Do NOT attempt to enter traffic lanes and pick up debris, etc.
4. Put on your hazard lights, release and prop up your hood (if you can exit the vehicle safely) as a signal to alert other motorists about your condition
