Time management

It's key to enjoying the holidays.

By Maria Bailey and Jennifer ArnoldPublished: December, 2009

The turkey is done, we’ve given our thanks and the countdown is on. Yes, the holidays are just around the corner, and the mere thought of what lies ahead can produce heart-palpitating stress. It’s no wonder, when you consider the mountain of shopping, baking, cleaning, entertaining and decorating staring us in the face. That load, coupled with the high expectations of the season, can be daunting even for the über-organized among us. The trick is being able to truly manage the holidays without feeling overwhelmed. It is possible, and it all comes down to one key tactic: time management. With some careful thought and planning, and a few minor but significant changes, you can welcome the joy of the holidays – and you’ll feel energized rather than depleted going into the new year!

> Set your priorities
During this time of year, we often find ourselves so busy that we forget the true meaning of the holidays. It’s a good exercise to ask yourself early in the season what kind of holiday celebration you want for you and your family. Write it down. Make a list, and prioritize those events and activities that you absolutely want to do. If you’re having trouble refining this list, just ask your kids what they remember best from last year. Let this list be your guide when asked to make commitments and compromises. If spending time with family is a top priority, then don’t be afraid to turn down that party invitation that will take you away from loved ones. If teaching your kids the true meaning of giving is important, then gather the family together and brainstorm some volunteering ideas.
