Blogging 101

5 things to consider before getting started

By Maria Bailey and Jennifer ArnoldPublished: February, 2010

As a busy mompreneur, your schedule is already packed with the duties of managing both your business and your family. Time and resources are limited, so the thought of dipping your toes into social media can feel overwhelming. Today however, businesses that are one-dimensional cannot survive.

A Web site or 800 number alone will not suffice, and there is a certain pressure to join the conversation around your brand – or risk being shut out completely. A blog is a great opportunity to establish yourself as an expert in your field. If executed effectively, a blog can also be a smart online strategy and an affordable way to grow your business. As you consider adding a blog to your business toolkit, here are a few things to keep in mind.

> Have a plan
Just as you started your business with a plan, you will need to draft a marketing plan specific to your blog. Take some time to really think through your goals. What do you hope to accomplish by adding a blog, and how will it positively impact your business?  Begin with the end in mind, and think about where you hope to be in a year. By being specific and strategic about what you hope to accomplish, you can lay a strong foundation to slowly build upon.

> Know your own voice
Chances are there is already a lot of chatter happening online surrounding your industry. In the end, a substantial part of your brand is what people read and talk about online. A blog can give your business a personality and facilitate the conversation between you and your customer. Infusing your business with your own thoughts, your own opinions and your authentic voice can make you stand out. Decide what it is that you want to project and how you will position yourself against the clutter. What can you offer that is not available elsewhere? Know your voice and how it’s unique.
