Why Bree?

Stephenie Meyer’s novella features an unlikely character

By Kristen SchottPublished: July, 2010

My best friend recently purchased Stephenie Meyer’s “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers for my birthday. Up until I opened her gift, I had never intended to read it. (I frankly didn’t remember who the character, who makes an appearance in “Eclipse,” is.) But now that it’s in my hands, I’m intrigued – and a bit confused.

I haven’t read the novella yet, and I’m not sure how to go about it. According to a number of dedicated “Twilight” fans, you’re actually supposed to read the novella before you read “Eclipse,” breaking the “Twilight” series as we know it. So, should I re-read all the books in the proper order now?

Also, why this character? Why not one of the other “newborn” vampires, such as Riley, the character who red-headed Victoria makes her dedicated follower in her quest to bring down Bella and the Cullens? Why not do a spin-off story from the viewpoint of one of Bella’s “human” friends? What about the Volturi or Charlie Swan? Why Bree?

Meyer called the novella an “exercise” to look at the other sides of “Eclipse.”

"I thought it might end up as a short story that I could include on my website. Then, when work started on ‘The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide,’ I thought the ‘Guide’ would be a good fit for my Bree story,” she said. “However, the story grew longer than I anticipated, until it was too long to fit into the ‘Guide.’”

Whatever it is, this “exercise” is yet another addition to Meyer’s booming young-adult vampire series, and from the fan following the books – and movies – have, I believe this one may also meet with success. (More than 1 million copies have sold since its release on June 5, if that’s any indication of how it will fare.)

However, I am still confused by it. Once I open the pages, I hope my questions will be answered.
