Moms speak out on H1N1 vaccine

Read the comments moms posted about the H1N1 vaccine.

Kimberly A. PorrazzoPublished: November, 2009

The following comments were posted on our H1N1 vaccine survey in which we asked mothers if they planned to vaccinate their children to protect them from H1N1.  They were very honest with their replies.

"My child is not high risk, and in my area the vaccines (most) have mercury in them. I think it's way over-hyped and the vaccine companies stand to make a lot of money off it. My son got all his vaccines until one year old, and then I began to do some research and decided against any more for now. I agree with the comment about SARS, also makes me think of all the hysteria about the West Nile Virus..."

"I was just talking with a friend about how as a child (I'm dating myself) we were convinced that if there was some kind of nuclear attack on this country, getting under our classroom desks in a tucked position would somehow protect us from the devastation. We innocently believed that the mandated drills were constructed by people who knew how to protect us in the event of such an attack. In recalling these "practice" drills, we were amazed at how trusting the public with what the government was dishing out, and what a farce it all was. We then talked about how similar the pushing of this vaccination is, and how incredible it is that a huge American pharmaceutical company, with many powerful shareholders, can create this fear in so many us. It was great to see so many fellow moms that were not going to follow the path of fear and do some research of their own to make a responsible decision. "

"I don't trust the vaccine. We don't have any information on the long term effects. I feel it is being pushed on us by our government. As is is, our pediatrician does not even have it. I would have to take my kids to Walgreens or CVS or wait 5 hours in a line at a free clinic. No thank you."

"Although I have two uncles (my grandmothers uncles, actually) who died in the 1918 epidemic, and "everyone" is crying about how this threatens to be an even worse outbreak, and the fact that my mother calls me every week questioning me on whether or not I have had the kids vaccinated yet (and is relentless about recounting the latest H1N1 related deaths she has heard about on the news), I am still unconvinced that No. 1 the vaccine is safe, No. 2 the vaccine is necessary (because big-pharma has to make money somehow), and No. 3 my kids would not battle the infection just fine without it.
Am I disgusted that the media/govt is trying to make me feel as though I am playing Russian roulette with my children's lives if I don't run out and get them vaccinated. Our pediatrician doesn't even have the vaccine yet! And even if they did, who am I to give my healthy child a vaccine which could be used for a child more at risk? There is not enough vaccine for everyone. I guess I just still have too many unanswered questions to jump into the vaccine boat just yet. "

"A few things...
~Lots of doctors in our area aren't giving the vaccine because it contains mercury AND two preservatives (one of which has been found to cause autoimmune problems!).

~There are a few people in our local schools who have gotten H1N1 and while they have been VERY SICK they have survived.

~One of our friend's children got the flu and the doctor didn't test to see if it was the regular flu or H1N1. BUT, he said he was going to record it as H1N1. Padding numbers? You be the judge!"

"The vaccination is still too new. We don't know the long term effects of this new vaccine. I'd rather wait and see."

"It does seem to be the threat predicted. More seem affected by seasonal flu. Has the vaccine been rigorously tested?"

"I think H1N1 is being blown out of proportion. What happened to letting kids build up healthy immune systems NATURALLY? I'm not against vaccines, but the number that kids are getting these days is ridiculous - and no one's old enough yet to actually learn what the repercussions of so many vaccines are. "

"Most of the vaccines for so called "exotic" and "life threatening" diseases are baloney and not necessary. In fact, the media have been making these diseases like H1N1 over-hyped. Basically, the MAIN and the most CRITICAL reason for people getting sick easily because more people are getting overweight or obese than the last generations. Yet, we are more negligent about basic hygiene practices like hand washing and covering the mouth when sneezing and coughing. So as long as we have proper nutrition by including more vegetables, fruits and whole grains, also exercise to maintaining ideal weight; as well as proper hygiene practice. You won't need to put these unnecessary vaccines to our children."

"The cynic in me thinks this is a huge money making venture for the pharma companies. I tend to think these things are blown out of all proportion. Fear mongering plain and simple. I also think that with good hygene and diet one can fight the flu by keeping healthy. Injecting harmful chemicals into my child's bloodstream is not something I'd prefer to do ."

"The good outweigh the bad. We live in a high-risk area and already have people we know that have been ridden with this awful disease. I am also an advocate of vaccines as I am an Immunization Technician with the military. Although I am required to keep up to date with unusual vaccine (Anthrax, Smallpox etc), I would not necessarily get my child vaccinated with those mentioned. I just believe in the power of the shots. Far too many people do not truly understand why immunizations are important to keep up on. I understand concerns for parents with autistic kids. I think that spacing your vaccines is fine, but people need to continue the series as recommended. The reason we don't have these diseases in our country is because of vaccines. H1N1 is too close for comfort for all of us in SoCal. "

"This is a HUGE scam by big pharma. They've made millions from producing Fear. Remember how badly we were affected by SARS?"
