If you could eat anything you wanted to eat and not gain a pound, what would it be? “Pastries. I love good pastries, especially chocolate éclairs (without the inch-thick band on top). A nice thin layer of chocolate on top and the flaky pastry ... oh, man.” –Bonnie, 37, Laguna Beach “Pizza and chocolate chip cookie dough!” –Angela, 41, Irvine “LAY’S potato chips! Sweet potato French fries would be my No. 2!” –Vicki, 49, Santa Ana “Anything and everything chocolate under the sun. If I could eat without fear of health consequences, I might be tempted to abandon every other food group.” –Debra, 40, Newport Beach “Pasta with marinara or Alfredo sauce. Yum!” –Diann, 53, Irvine “I probably sound like a kid here, but my response is macaroni ’n cheese.” –Shelley, 49, Santa Ana “Good cheese with crusty bread, accompanied by wine.” –Jennifer, 28, Rancho Santa Margarita “Ice cream.” –Karen, 41, Tustin “It would have to be something involving chocolate. Likely a pastry, but it might also be straight-up something (fruit, pretzel, peanut butter, potato chip) covered in chocolate – the darker the better!” –Kristan, 36, Newport Beach Compiled by Elisabeth Handley, a contributing writer to OC Family magazine. Strong Bones: What you can do to keep them that way By Mary Knudtson, DNSC, NP Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease in humans. It is characterized by porous, weak bones that can break easily. The risk of developing the disease grows with age, for both women and men. But while osteoporosis predominantly afflicts older women, it needs to be a concern of younger women, too, because diet and lifestyle changes during the 20s and 30s can help to prevent osteoporosis later. Most people don’t know they are at risk for osteoporosis until a fracture occurs, which can be dangerous and debilitating. Here are things you can do to reduce your risk of osteoporosis: > Consume enough calcium – 1,200 mg every day > Consume enough vitamin D – 800-1,000 IU every day > Do regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises, which strengthen bones and decrease the risk of falls. > Stop smoking > Avoid excessive alcohol intake > Limit caffeine to no more than two or three caffeinated drinks per day. > Avoid excess vitamin A > Avoid excess salt consumption > Avoid regular use of antacids containing aluminum > Get a bone-mineral-density test after menopause. Younger women who may be at risk should consult with their health care provider to see if they need to be tested. Osteoporosis can be prevented in most people with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Follow these guidelines to reduce your risk, and discuss prevention with your health care provider. So I decided to check out Bodytone Spa Health and Fitness. Though the fitness center has been open since 2004, the spa has been open less than a year. As soon as I walked into the center, located along Weir Canyon Road in Anaheim Hills, I was transported to what seemed like a haven of health. The boutique spa is intimate and inviting, making it easy to unwind after a long day’s work. The women’s locker room has a sauna, full showers and two handicapped- accessible bathrooms. After changing into my cozy robe and slippers, I was escorted to the waiting room, adorned with plush carpeting, modern architecture and rich earth tones. I treated myself to a glass of iced lemon water and a protein bar and relaxed with a magazine. After getting through just a few pages, my name was called. My esthetician guided me down an appropriately decorated bamboo-covered hallway and into a treatment room where I enjoyed a 60-minute Moisture Extreme Facial. I cocooned under the sheets and let her massage away my tired, dull complexion. The spa uses eco-luxury products, such as Éminence, a hand-made organic skin care line from Hungary, and Phytocéane, a natural brand with marine ingredients, such as seaweed and sea coral. The highlights of my facial included the application of an AHA gel to exfoliate my dead skin, a hand, foot and back massage, and the application of a Naturoplast facial mask made of seaweed to tighten pores and hydrate my skin. In just an hour, I left feeling fresh and confident in my makeup-free skin. Since then, friends and family mentioned that I have a “glow and smoothness” to my skin. Bodytone is a wonderful place for those tired of the commercial spas and fitness centers. Whether you’re looking to get in shape or just relax, Bodytone is a one-stop shop for a total body and mind makeover. > Bodytone Spa, Health & Fitness 751 S.
