Mom's Day Off

Take time for yourself!

Between us girls...
This month's question: What haven’t you done in your life that you still hope to do?

“I’d like to have more in savings to feel secure for my children’s future. I’d like to have some ‘fun money’ to be able to take BIG vacations to Europe and other places that I have never been. I’d love to bring my children and have them experience being well-traveled. Other than that, I’d like to learn to play the piano!” Debbie, 40, of Tustin

“Take part of a summer and travel to every Major League Baseball stadium in the U.S. (and Canada!), to enjoy games with my father.” Pamela, 44, of Newport Beach

“I want to build a house for a needy family in Mexico, and I want to learn Spanish. Maybe I can combine the two!” Molly, 34, of Laguna Beach

“See all of my friends a heck of a lot more often, and help my daughter achieve happiness and success in life.” Shereen, 28, of Costa Mesa

“I’d like to spend Christmas in Tuscany, because it’s warm and beautiful. Learn how to drive a race car and whiz around a professional course. Develop a stand-up comedy routine and perform at a nightclub.” Amy, 37, of Irvine

“Learn to play the guitar. When I was young, I learned how to play the piano and then was strongly encouraged (forced) to pick a wind instrument. So, I played the flute and the alto saxophone ... but what I really wanted to learn to play was the guitar. So, what is stopping me now? Time. I definitely would like to take some lessons and also would need to buy a guitar!” Cindy, 40, of Santa Ana

“Learn more about history! I am so clueless, since I didn’t pay attention in school (I was too social), and now it’s just embarrassing all that I don’t know!” Niki, 39, of Corona del Mar

“Live to retire with grace.” Lola, 63, of Irvine

“Get married.” Suzanne, 42, of Newport Beach

Get your tan on!

Airbrush tanning is safe AND looks real, too!
By Susan Belknapp

Are you still risking your largest, most visible organ to the damaging, potentially disfiguring, even deadly effects of UVA and UVB exposure? Not necessary!

Get a beautiful, even, healthy-looking tan – while camouflaging imperfections like spider or varicose veins, cellulite, vitiligo (loss of pigment) or freckles – with airbrush tanning. It takes 10 minutes and lasts up to a week.

Claims sunless.com, “An airbrush tan is as close to perfect as a sunless tan can get.”

Most dermatologists agree that the only “safe” tan is a sunless tan. “UV exposure presents incredibly high risk,” says dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Lauber of Advanced Skin Treatment Center of Orange County (advancedskin ofoc.com). “And it results in wrinkles, age spots and, of course, skin cancer.”

The active ingredient in sunless tanners is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar derivative approved by the FDA in the 1970s. Strides have been made in the refinement of the sugars, resulting in longer-lasting solutions with much more natural-looking color.

“You no longer have to worry about turning orange,” says Shana Neslen, partner of OC tan2u, a mobile airbrush tanning service in O.C. They also offer a party menu with options like “Tini & Tan” (guests decorate martini glasses while each party-goer gets tanned) and an “OMG There are Kids Here” party, where staff entertains kids with arts and crafts projects, while moms get tanned.

A mobile tanning professional will come to your door (or party) and give you an all-over tan for about $40-$60. Artists bring the equipment, including a nylon booth – a kind of half tent – that blocks any overspray.

Summer glow
The best natural-looking makeup
By Monique Berry

Leave the bright colors to the birds, the bees, the flowers and the trees this summer. Lighten up and enhance your natural beauty and skin tone with these outstanding products:

> By indulging in a quick and easy spritz of Evian Mineral Atomizer a few times a day, you can revitalize, soften and refresh your dry, sun-kissed face. This perfect, natural pick-me-up skin freshener quickly hydrates, without disturbing your makeup. Small enough to fit into the smallest summertime purse, this inexpensive must-have is available at Longs Drug Store or Walgreens for $5.

> A great remedy to soften lines and wrinkles, hide imperfections, and keep the oil and sweat from our faces in the Southern California heat is American Beauty Perfect Mineral Powder Makeup. This extremely light (talc-free) mineral powder is unbelievably silky and blends effortlessly. The natural mineral properties will allow the skin to breathe all day, without clogging your pores or turning “cakey.” It is available in five great shades. You can find American Beauty Perfect Mineral Powder at Kohl’s department store for $25.

> Not only did Bobbi Brown cosmetics hit the mark on the beautiful, natural eye-shadow colors for this summer season, they developed a water-resistant crème eye shadow that is out of this world. When the heat causes most other eye shadows to melt, run or fade away, Bobbi Brown’s Long-Wear Cream Shadow will look freshly applied and will stay in place all day. Available at Nordstrom for $23.

Just like the season, your summertime makeup should look light, fresh and always natural!
