Beauty for a cause

Make your purchases count.

By Janae RaphaelPublished: September, 2009

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and many individuals and corporations are thinking of ways they can contribute.

Several cosmetic and hair care companies have partnered with nonprofits to raise funds for important causes. When consumers choose to spend money on philanthropic products, they help spur other businesses to respond in kind.

I.C.O.N., a professional hair care line, is dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. To this end, it has launched a worldwide campaign, Cure for a Cause. A portion from the sales of Cure Leave-in Conditioner goes to STOP CANCER, a nonprofit working with the City of Hope and other cancer research organizations.

Clarisonic is proud to support breast cancer research with its limited pink Clarisonic Facial Brush. With every purchase, the company will make a donation to help fund the fight against breast cancer. Get gorgeous, glowing skin with the Clarisonic Facial Brush, available for $195.

PureOlogy Serious Colour Care supports ovarian cancer awareness by donating to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) as the exclusive hair care and styling Premier Sponsor. PureOlogy encourages women to participate in their walks/runs to “Break the Silence” on ovarian cancer.

O.P.I. International, makers of O.P.I. Nail Lacquer, has donated millions of dollars to charities worldwide, most notably the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the City of Hope, Gilda’s Club Worldwide, the Leukemia Research Foundation, the National Kidney Foundation, Oceana and Pamper Me Pink, among others.

Smashbox Cosmetics donates a portion of the proceeds from its PINK Powder EYE & LIP KIT to the Young Survival Coalition. The kit includes two mirrored palettes, each with three gorgeous eye shadow and lip shades, plus a mini double-ended brush, $34.50

Planet Beauty, Orange County’s No.1 beauty boutique, has been a corporate sponsor of Susan G. Komen’s Orange County Race for the Cure for the past five years. In June, Planet Beauty Orange County raised $1,735 in one night for the Susan G. Komen Orange County affiliate for the fight against breast cancer.

Blooms against Breast Cancer flower hair clips are handmade by breast cancer survivor and Planet Beauty sales associate Pam Tiyabi. The clips sell for $10, and a portion from each clip is donated to KomenOC.

Stop by the Planet Beauty booth on race Day, Sunday, Sept. 27, for samples and giveaways.

Vitamin D: How much should I get daily?
By Robin De-Ivy Allen

The power and necessity of vitamin D has been completely underestimated, especially when it comes to our immune system. Several recent studies have suggested that vitamin D, better known for its role in building strong bones, may also play a critical role in immune system function.

One study shows that people with the lowest vitamin D levels report having significantly more cases of colds and flu than those with higher levels.

Here’s the recommended daily intake for healthy adults in each life stage:

> Ages 19-50: 200 International Units (IU)
> Ages 51-69: 400 IU
> Age 70 and older: 600 IU

Vitamin D can be found in a variety of sources, one of which is our food. It can be found in fish (such as salmon, tuna and mackerel). Fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, egg yolks and some mushrooms.

Fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in the American diet. For example, almost all of the U.S. milk supply is fortified with vitamin D. Ready-to-eat breakfast cereals often contain added vitamin D, as do some brands of orange juice, yogurt, and margarine.

Sun exposure is another vitamin D source. Most people can meet their vitamin D needs through exposure to sunlight. Those with limited sun exposure need to include good sources of vitamin D in their diet or take a supplement.

This is a great time and season to take a good sunbath in vitamin D.

Massage Envy

Don’t be jealous! A monthly massage is possible.
By Susan Belknapp

Why didn’t someone think of this sooner? Massage Envy is a company dedicated to providing conveniently located, affordable therapeutic massage for “every body”? Sounds good to me.

Massage Envy is founded on the contention that regular massage is highly beneficial for consistent pain management, stress relief and relaxation, making it an essential component to overall wellness.

When I visited the Anaheim Hills location, I was courteously greeted, checked in and given a Client Intake Form to fill out. As I filled out the questionnaire, which is thorough but not cumbersome, I sipped citrus water. The form helps the staff go over any health issues, injuries and current concerns.

My therapist, Megan, greeted me promptly and immediately put me at ease. I had been experiencing some severe sciatic pain, which was new to me; she assured me that she would do her best to provide me some relief without too much discomfort (a delicate balance).

One of the things I like about Massage Envy is the efficiency. There aren’t a lot of rooms, lockers and robes; you change in the actual treatment room and get right onto the heated table.

Megan began with me face up, and her deft touch immediately began to soothe away any tension in my face, neck, jaw and scalp – the best! She then moved to my neck and upper back, arms, hands, legs and feet. After turning onto my stomach, she carefully worked on my lower back and leg pain.

I can see how regular therapeutic treatment of these muscles would help keep me from ending up in this situation again. Massage Envy offers Swedish, deep tissue, sports, reflexology and cranial sacral massage. The prices are extremely reasonable, with varied and family packages available. Put this on your Christmas list, for the gift that keeps on giving.

Every Massage Envy will be participating in Massage for the Cure on Sept. 15. On that day, a one-hour massage will be $35, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Komen for the Cure.

Massage Envy has locations in Anaheim Hills, Placentia and downtown Brea. For other O.C. locations, go to massageenvy.com.
