![]() Through constant interaction with customers on sites such as Facebook and Twitter, Natural Being has increased its sales by 70 percent since December, when the company’s Irvine office opened. “We are thrilled with the tremendous success that the social media platforms have brought to our brand, and are so glad we utilized such popular tools,” says Debbie Wade-West, vice president at VMI Inc., the exclusive U.S. distributor of Natural Being. The certified, all-natural skincare line consists of nine products, including cleanser, toner, day lotion, night lotion and eye cream, as well as hand and body lotion available in various skin types. The products contain no synthetic preservatives, parabens, harsh chemicals, artificial colors or fragrances. The main ingredients in Natural Being’s products are Active Manuka honey and Manuka oil, both native to New Zealand, where the products are manufactured. Containing unique anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties, the oils help to moisturize the skin, improve suppleness, diminish skin roughness and stimulate cell renewal. All-natural skincare products are often sold at higher prices, due to more expensive ingredients, increased production costs, and a number of stringent regulations and certifications. Natural Being’s affordability sets it apart from other organic lines; the full skincare package can be purchased for $76; other brands often charge upwards of $100 for a full package. Currently, the line can only be purchased through the site naturalbeingskincare.com. In January, Natural Being launched “New year. Natural you.” It’s a 28-day skincare challenge using Facebook to test their products and get user reactions. Wade-West said that suggestions and feedback from the Facebook users was “invaluable,” adding that the social media method of sharing makes the concept of focus groups “a little easier to manage and implement.” naturalbeingskincare.com •> MOM’S GIVEAWAY Natural Being Skincare wants to thank all the moms who go above and beyond to pamper the ones they love while conquering the world, wearing a smile all the way. I was an athlete (still am) – a figure skater who incorporated falling and bad jumping technique into every workout. Consequently, my knees hate me. The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of the four major ligaments of the human knee. It connects the bones of the joint and provides stability. It cuts down on the stress across the knee joint and restrains excessive forward movement and also limits rotation. Let’s state the obvious: Men are different than women, and girls are different than boys. And while that’s the simplest answer as to why girls suffer more ACL injuries, an exact answer is still forthcoming. Girls are two to eight times more likely to have ACL injuries than boys. Until recently, hormonal changes were considered the culprit. And while I don’t have solid numbers on this, I’d bet those studies were done by men. To be fair, hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle are thought to change the laxity of women’s muscles. But there are other factors. Recent ACL research has focused on the neuro-muscular differences between men and women, as well as the necessary enforcement of female-specific technique. Women’s knees move differently than men’s. Our knees are forced into hyperextension and/or internal rotation when we jump or land. An example of this is a gymnast’s dismount after a balance beam routine. She’ll land with the knees hyperextended and often pivot after the landing, sometimes unsteadily; some 85 percent of ACL injuries happen when an athlete is off balance. Preventing injury to the ACL is a two-fold responsibility: learning proper athletic technique and correction by the coach. Gyms such as Athletic Republic in Santa Ana specialize in training designed to increase performance and prevent injuries. arocspeed.com Tamirra Stewart is a contributing writer for OC Family magazine. •> LAVSH LIVING By Susan Belknapp I have been hearing whispers for months about a revolutionary new hair-smoothing treatment that would be perfect for my heavy, curly hair that has a tendency to frizz despite the arsenal of styling products I have enlisted to prevent this. I’ve toyed with the idea of permanent or chemical straightening but never pursued it for two reasons: fear of severe damage and the fact that I like having the option to wear my hair curly when I want. Sure enough, I began to see TV magazine shows covering the Brazilian Blowout – the “latest thing in Hollywood.” Superstars have their locks rendered silky smooth and easy to straighten, but still holding curl. Really? My sister, a client of stylist Samantha Murguia, owner and spa director at Lavish Hair Salon and Day Spa in Riverside, reiterated how unique the treatment was, and I finally laid down my heat-generating hair torture devices and said, “Okay, I’m in.” Lavish is a hip, fun, friendly salon that offers a variety of day spa services. Samantha and her assistant Kelly explained the procedure. First, Kelly would cleanse my hair thoroughly with the Brazilian Blowout anti-residue shampoo to prepare the surface of my hair. Including a full scalp massage, this part was incredible. Kelly is one of the great hair washers of all time. Next, Samantha sectioned off my hair, and she and Kelly began applying the Brazilian Blowout solution with brushes, working in tandem to cover quickly. The thing I loved the most about the treatment was the fact that I was being worked on the whole time. There was no long downtime when I had to sit under lights or a hair dryer and wait. Once the solution was applied, the hair was blow-dried and flat-ironed. This seals the product into the hair. Then after all that work, we started over with a thorough hair rinse (another scalp massage!) and the application of the deep conditioning masque and smoothing serum. You can then style as usual. The result? My hair is infinitely more soft, shiny and manageable. It still curls naturally but is far easier to control. When I want to straighten my hair, it takes a fraction of the time and is 100 times more responsive. Lavish 473 Alessandro Blvd., Suite B Riverside 951.780.6008 lavishsds.com |
