New year, new you!

Make and keep your new year's resolution. Plus, great products from Planet Beauty, and a couples massage at The Spa at the Ritz-Carlton.

By Janae RaphaelPublished: January, 2009

For many people, the new year brings a fresh opportunity to make positive life changes. Typically, New Year’s resolutions involve improving one’s health and physical appearance, learning a new skill or hobby, quitting bad habits such as smoking or cursing, or getting a handle on finances.

Here are some tips on how to keep your New Year’s resolutions going strong.

1. Set realistic goals
If you want to lose weight but hate going to the gym, don’t expect your feelings to change. Pick another activity that you enjoy, such as walking around the mall. Try a digital pedometer from brunton.com to track distances walked while running errands. You’ll be surprised how much easier exercising can be when combining it with enjoyable activities.

2. Create a plan; set a schedule
Every successful business venture begins with a clearly defined plan. Want to pay off those credit card bills? Develop a plan that includes creating and sticking to a budget. If your resolution involves things to be done daily or weekly, decide when you’ll have time to do those activities. Schedule time in your planner and keep them. FranklinCovey offers planner packages designed for women at franklinplanner.com.

3. Keep a journal
Journaling is one of the best ways to set goals. When you run out of motivation, look back on the progress that you have made so far. Rejuvenatiogifts.com has many inspirational journals for women, including the “She Decided to Start Living the Life She Had Imagined” version, available for $12.

4. Reward yourself
After you’ve quit smoking, reward yourself and get your teeth whitened. Trying to save money? Many women forgo their regular spa or salon visits when trying to save. Get your budget beauty fix and do your hair and nails yourself with Ojon hair care or Orly nail care products, available at Planet Beauty stores or at planetbeauty.com.

Don’t let setbacks and roadblocks derail you. Persistence pays!

Enjoy a couples massage at the Ritz-Carlton

My husband Shawn and I arrived at the picturesque Ritz-Carlton on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were immediately welcomed. I was giddy with anticipation for our Mama Mio Maternity Massage Couple’s Package.

We continued through the lobby, with its breathtaking ocean views, to the spa, where we were again greeted by friendly staff members.

Shawn and I were led to a private waiting area to enjoy a steam, shower or Jacuzzi before our treatment. Once we slipped into our plush robes, the waiting area felt more like a private retreat. The soft cream-colored interiors were set off with white roses, candles, chandeliers and indoor waterfalls. Ensconced in this beauty, it felt like our honeymoon again.

The couples’ room was lit softly by candlelight and had heated racks that held our robes, a water feature and side-by-side massage tables. Our therapists asked about any problem areas and what type of pressure we preferred.

As any pregnant woman will attest, the lower back, stress-ridden shoulders and aching feet are all crying out for a
little TLC.

My husband has never been a big spa guy, preferring to hit the golf course instead. Consider him converted. He will continue to get massages with me in the future and commented that, even though we were only 12 miles from home, it felt like we were on one of our best Hawaiian vacations.

Before the baby comes, treat yourselves to a “babymoon.” All the cares of work, home and parenthood are swept out to sea on a gentle breeze, with the Mama Mio Couples Package at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel.
