Fall colors
What's new in makeup

Like the deep and intriguing colors reminiscent of my favorite Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painting, “Odalisque With a Slave,” this fall’s colors and makeup are nothing short of stunning. Here is a peek into some fantastic, affordable and easy-to-find cosmetics.

Just right for both day and night, Revlon’s shadows are fun and lightweight, and glide on easily with your fingertips.

What is the happiest memory you have?

“It would have to be the memories of playing board games on the back porch with my mom in the summer. I think we
really only did it one year, but I loved it and wouldn’t trade it for all of the money in the world.”
– Brenda, 28, of Newport Beach

“Probably the memory that brings me a warm feeling is riding in my car with my young niece playing a word game. We were just driving along having so much fun together that I completely missed the freeway interchange that we needed to take, and we took an unexpected detour that lead to even more laughter. It was the spontaneity of the moment and the joy of spending time with her that was so special to me.”
– Kimberly, 46, of Costa Mesa

“My father pulled me out of school when I was in the second grade to take me out to my first big girl lunch … where I got to order off the adult menu (no chicken fingers! No macaroni and cheese!) and have a grown-up conversation. Afterward, we stopped at a candy shop, and he bought me one of those big swirled lollipops.”
– Tisha, 30, of Irvine

“Running around on the grass on a sunny day at my grandparents’ house when I was about 3 or 4, playing in the sprinklers, and my mom’s warm skin smelling like Coppertone.”
– Nicole, 38, of Rancho Santa Margarita

“Sitting on the beach alone with my husband the day after we got married, collecting rocks and digging our toes into the sand.”
– Sandi, 34, of Irvine

“Doing anything – does not matter what – with my dad!”
– Kelly, 36, of Costa Mesa

“My happiest memory is also my earliest. I was about 4 when my mom and dad took me on a camping trip to Arizona. There is an area there called Slide Rock – sort of a natural water slide. I remember sitting in my dad’s lap and flying down
into the pool at the bottom. I even remember the shirt he was wearing.”
– Samantha, 39, of Newport Beach

“A memory that truly stands out for me is warm, humid summer evenings chasing lightning bugs (some call them fireflies).”
– Shelley, 48, of Santa Ana

Beat breast cancer
By Dr. Karen Lane

Most women find breast cancer to be a worrisome topic. A more hopeful view is this: Seven out of eight U.S. women will NOT develop breast cancer in their lifetimes. But because one in eight will – and early detection offers up to a 90 percent success rate – all women need a yearly mammogram starting at age 40. There are steps that young women should take, too, with extra attention by those with a family history of breast cancer:

> Starting at age 18, all women need an annual physical breast exam from their primary-care doctor or OB-GYN. Mammograms are not particularly useful for women in their 20s, when breast tissue tends to be denser, making it more difficult to detect a mass.  Ultrasound may be used, initially, if a lump is found in a young woman.

> Women may need annual breast MRIs if their mother, sister or close relative had breast cancer. Family history increases the risk of breast cancer. Such women may need to schedule earlier mammograms, too. For example, if your mother was diagnosed at age 47, you will need yearly mammograms starting at age 37.

> Talk to your doctor about testing for the “breast cancer gene” if you have a family history. The gene indicates an
85 percent lifetime chance of developing breast cancer. UC Irvine’s Breast Center offers a program for women with a family history of breast cancer.

> Do your self-exams regularly in the shower or while putting on lotion. Look for anything different or new, and report changes to your physician.

> In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, get screened. And consider getting involved. The Orange County Race for the Cure, which raises funds and offers public education, is Sept. 28 in Newport Beach. Sign up at komenoc.org/. n

Wrap it off!
Lose inches in just one hour

It’s one of the biggest shocks for new moms. Unlike celebrity moms, most of us are carrying more pounds than we’d like. And even if we drop all our baby weight, our old jeans are still too tight.

So it’s natural that many moms want to try slimming body wraps. These body contour treatments promise to reduce the appearance of cellulite, detoxify the body and restore elasticity to flabby skin.

Now that my baby is weaned and sleeping through the night, I have no excuse not to exercise and eat better. So why not get the physical and mental lift that comes from a treatment that feels good and helps shed inches?

I went to Lemuria, a Newport Beach spa, where I had an Internal Cleansing Wrap from M’LIS. Esthetician Kim Arvdalen explained it would detoxify my body by reducing wastes trapped in the tissues under the skin, stimulating inch loss. She applied a cinnamon-scented, niacin-based lotion, then wrapped me up in clear plastic.

I found the treatment to be more peaceful than expected, considering I was bound in what looks like saran wrap. They gave me paraffin and warm booties for my feet, and a hand-and-foot massage. For a stay-at-home mom of two, it was the most peace and quiet I’d had all week.

Most of Lemuria’s clients come in for Arasys, a machine that uses microcurrents to shrink inches off the body. The detoxifying wraps are often used to complement Arasys, and owner Judetta Warren says both treatments need to be used in a series for maximum results. Body wraps, which should be repeated for every five to 10 pounds lost, are not advised for breast-feeding mothers.

Just 75 minutes later, I was relaxed and inspired to eat right and work to shed my final post-baby pounds. My legs and arms felt tighter, my pants looser, and I got an unsolicited “You look great” from a friend who hadn’t seen me in weeks.

> Lemuria’s internal cleansing wrap costs $140, or $180 with a hand or scalp massage. Purchase five and receive 10 percent off the total cost.  lemuriaspa.com
