Murdy of Mission Viejo 10 ways to stay fit on a skinny budgetBy Dr. James Lally, D.O., MMM, chief medical officer, Chino Valley Medical Center If you’re trying to reduce expenses, forgoing a gym membership may be a sensible option. There are plenty of low-cost alternatives to a gym that can save those monthly fees. “The most important aspect of staying fit is to engage in physical activity on a regular basis,” says Dr. James M. Lally, an osteopathic family practitioner from Chino. “This physical activity could be anything from walking to running to even cleaning your house. As long as your heart rate goes up for an extended period of time, you can experience all the benefits of a more structured workout.” Here are 10 great tips to exercise on the cheap: 1. Make a home gym: An exercise ball, a workout step, hand weights and a resistance band are enough for full-body fitness. 2. Walk or run outside: The only equipment you need is a good pair of shoes. 3. Pop in a DVD: With thousands of options available, you’re sure to find a DVD that suits your interests and fitness level. 4. Get in the game: Play a game of tag, kickball or four square with your kids to get moving and create lasting memories. 5. Work out around the house: Chores can be exercise when you increase your heart rate for at least 10 minutes. Vacuuming, scrubbing floors and mowing the lawn are all good calorie burners. 6. Play sports: Get into a sport such as tennis, softball or badminton. You’ll meet new people and have a regular energy outlet. 7. Park it: Go to the park and throw a Frisbee or hike the trails. 8. Old school: Sit-ups, push-ups, lunges and jumping jacks can be done anywhere. 9. Dance: Crank up the music and get moving. 10. Join a club: A biking, running or walking club can be a regular appointment with fitness. SPA OF THE MONTH:Making Faces By Kaysie Ellingson My reservations about beautification procedures began to taunt me as I opened the door to Making Faces, the quaint spa tucked away on Newport Beach’s Dover Street. I’ve always avoided spas. Some of the treatments, though relaxing and apparently good for the mind and body, appeared to be rather painful. However, upon meeting Georgia, with her energetic, hospitable personality, my fears eased. Due to my salicylic acid allergy, many of the treatments were off limits, so we decided on a combination of options consisting of a “resolution treatment” and light therapy. The first stage of the resolution treatment involved an enzyme mask, which, as Georgia described, is an oatmeal mask designed to rid the skin of any dryness. With soothing music in the background, I began to unwind as the enzyme mask was gently painted on my face and a steady flow of steam surrounded my eyes and filled my nostrils. Following the enzyme mask, the procedure I have always dreaded was next: extractions. Much to my surprise, it is not painful at all, only somewhat uncomfortable at times. To avoid any infections, Georgia used a high-frequency generator over the entire surface of my face, which, as she predicted, felt like microscopic needles penetrating my skin. The resolution mask was the final stage of the first procedure, which was as comfortable and relaxing as the treatment in its entirety. The repairing light therapy was something I did not expect and had never heard of. Lumiere Light Therapy – from my experience – consists of 20 minutes of exposure to red light. Not to worry; this red light is neither composed of laser nor UVA/UVB rays. It is simply red spectrum light, which stimulates the skin to produce collagen while shrinking the pores. The procedure was in no way painful. However, it was slightly uncomfortable, due to the visual intensity of the light; after a few minutes, my eyes adjusted, and there was little discomfort. I succumbed to a state of total relaxation for the remaining 17 minutes of my facial. Observing my reflection in the mirror, I immediately noticed the effects of the treatment. My skin looked smoother, even and moisturized, while my pores appeared smaller. After my experience at Making Faces, I may reconsider my preconceived wariness of spa treatments. > Making Faces Advanced Skin & Body Care Center 747 Dover St., Ste.
