![]() If you’re like me, when you see a woman wearing little to no eye makeup, you may assume that she is tired or simply too busy to go through the tedious routine of applying her chosen product. To the contrary, a bit of mascara and eye shadow can say, “I am ready for the day.” Either way, making up our eyes is often a time-consuming drag! While I love to talk about makeup and the latest and greatest products on the market, I am deferring that chat for another day. Today, I am encouraging you to simplify and deny the heavy eye shadows, liners and mascaras, and bring out the natural beauty, color and shape of your eyes with these simple tips: > Shape your eyebrows. Well-defined eyebrows can reveal your eyes’ true beauty and shape. I have one brilliant product that is two tools in one: Sephora sells its Natural Mascara for only $10, and it works perfectly to shape and hold your brows in place. You only need a little bit of this clear gel on the brush to do a lot of good. Apply a small amount of product to the wand and simply shape your brows into a natural place, creating a small arch at the center/top area. This opens up the space that frames your eyes and will give you a groomed, fresh appearance. > Don’t put down Sephora’s Natural Mascara just yet! Simply touch the end of the wand with a small dab from your favorite mascara to obtain minimal color for natural and perfectly defined lashes. With just a little bit of color and shaping of the brows, your eyes will appear to be made up, but in a very natural and fresh fashion. > If you’re stuck on shadows and can’t fight the urge to add a little color, try just a touch of your warm, natural foundation on the base of your lids. It will help to hide any redness or discoloration. Finally, finish your lids with a small pat of powder to seal the deal. Now you can begin to let the world in and enjoy a ton of compliments when your natural beauty is revealed. n Monique Berry is a beauty writer, musician and developer of PlaneLogics LipAid. myspace.com/moniqueberry Be dazzled Just in time for the holiday parties, Antiqua is giving away a $69 pair of dazzling Garnet gem earrings that are married with 14k gold-filled wire and lever backs. Inside of a book, it’s too dark to read.” – Groucho Marx It’s my favorite quote, because it combines two of my passions: books/reading and canine companions. Shelley, 50, of Fountain Valley “It is better to have loved a Short than to never have loved a tall.” – Martin Short I love this quote because: (a) it’s hilarious and (b) it’s a clever play on words. Lanie, 39, of Newport Beach “Don’t be so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” – Unknown I am all too aware of the precariousness of life and how easily it consumes. Our world makes it so easy, even materially rewarding, for us to focus on our job to pay for our toys, and to pay for the storage of those toys, and not have the time to enjoy the toys or the people in our lives. Meg, 43, of Tustin “This, too, shall pass.” – Unknown I don’t know who originally said it, but I attribute it to my mother. It’s her and, thus, my mantra. Elizabeth, 48, of Irvine “Never die with the music still inside you.” – Unknown It’s a good reminder to live your life with passion and share with the world all the talents you were given.” Claire, 38, of Huntington Beach “Being in sales, I always quote the one about teaching a man to fish and he can eat for life.” Molly, 34, of Laguna Beach “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. I have this on a coffee cup, and it’s still my favorite quote. My next favorite quote is: “Knowledge is wasted when it isn’t shared.” J.M. Cornwell, 53, of Newport Beach Mark Twain said, “When in doubt, tell the truth.” Presumably, in doubt-free situations, it’s okay to lie like crazy. Smoking during pregnancy increases SIDS risk Since parents have started following their doctor’s advice to put their baby to sleep on his or her back, smoking during pregnancy has now become the principal risk factor for SIDS, says Dr. Shabih Hasan, an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Calgary and principal investigator of a study revealing this news, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Other contributing factors for SIDS include disturbances in breathing and heart rate, impaired arousal responses, stress from overheating (from either too-high room temperatures or too much clothing) and sleeping in the belly-down position. n Eat the veggies, dump the soda! Drinking lots of sugar-sweetened beverages or eating too few fruits and veggies are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, according to two new studies. Type 2 diabetes rates are on the rise. By 2030, 11.2 percent of U.S. adults are expected to have it. Obesity is the strongest modifiable risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. Women who drank two or more sodas per day had a 24-percent increase in diabetes risk compared to women who drank less than one soft drink per month; those who drank two or more sweetened fruit drinks per day had a 31 percent increased risk compared with women who drank less than one per month. Diet soft drinks, grapefruit juice and orange juice were not associated with increased diabetes risk. Eating lots of fruits and veggies may reduce diabetes risk by preventing obesity or by providing nutrients that protect against diabetes, including antioxidants, the study authors note. |
