Mom's Day Off

Don't flake out

Keep your scalp and hair healthy this winter. Plus: the importance of heart health, and this month's Mom's Giveaway: a Mommy On the Go Diaper Bag

By Jelyne SuratPublished: February, 2009

Winter is not only rough on your skin, it can wreak havoc on your scalp and hair, too. The dry flaking you see may not necessarily indicate dandruff, but it is simply dry skin shedding off the scalp due to everyday environmental factors such as exposure to cold outside and dry heat inside.

Here are a few simple tips that can help you keep your scalp and hair in optimal condition during the winter months:

> Use a humidifier to reduce dryness in the air and treat the scalp once a week to a purifying massage with René Furterer’s Complexe 5. The orange and lavender oils stimulate the scalp’s circulation and create optimal conditions, allowing better penetration of your other hair care products.

> Wash your hair less frequently to give your scalp a chance to maintain its natural balance. To keep hair clean and beautiful between shampoos, use a dry shampoo such as Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk or Naturia Dry Shampoo.

> Use shea butter and safflower oil, used in skin care products for their moisturizing properties, to help eliminate flaking on the scalp and hair, too. Karité shampoo and conditioner, by René Furterer, is a great shea butter option.

> For in-depth moisturizing, applying a weekly Karité Intense Nutrition Oil treatment will nourish your parched hair and scalp. However, if you have an oily scalp with dry hair, try the Curbicia range.

> Drink plenty of water and take your vitamins. René Furterer’s Vitalfan is formulated for hair, providing it with nutrients to promote stronger and thicker growth; you’ll likely see your nails get stronger, too.

Matters of the heart
By Peggy Kirkwood, RN, MSN, ACNP

February is American Heart Month, so consider giving your own heart a gift that can last a lifetime. There’s no better time to start taking steps toward heart disease prevention.

As the leading cause of death among American women, heart disease is a risk that must not be ignored. In addition to maintaining a sound diet, exercising regularly and not smoking, you should take advantage of available health care resources. This means educating yourself about prevention methods, talking to your health care provider about risk factors and getting regular screenings.

As a cardiovascular nurse practitioner for the Women’s Heart Health Program at the Mission Women’s Wellness Center, I work with patients as young as their late 20s – an age not too soon to begin ongoing efforts for heart disease prevention. I’ve seen firsthand how heart-risk assessments, diagnostic screenings, education and counseling can empower women to become active decision makers for their own heart health.

When caring for your heart, you and your health care provider should consider your entire body and lifestyle. You may not realize it, but how your heart performs affects many aspects of your life, and vice versa. Many quality heart health programs are easily accessible at an affordable rate. The one-on-one heart health screenings that I help administer look at body mass index, blood pressure, EKG (electrocardiogram) performance, and diabetes risk and lab profiles. Available to any self-referring woman, this one-hour consultation also gives a personalized outline of your heart disease risk over the next 10 years. Top this off with a de-stressing massage (also available at the Women’s Wellness Center), and you’re on your way to better heart health!

And what a fitting time it is, this American Heart Month, to get your heart health on track.

Peggy Kirkwood is a cardiovascular nurse practitioner at Mission Women’s Wellness Center at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Visit the center's Web site or call 949.347.1400, ext. 6159.
