Wine and dine

For a girls’ getaway, head to L.A. for vintage fun.

Directly up the 5 Freeway is a vestige of early California history: the family-owned and -operated San Antonio Winery. This California Cultural Historic Landmark traces back to 1917, when Santo Cambianica left his Italian home to migrate to Los Angeles. He founded the San Antonio Winery on Lamar Street, where it has been operating ever since.

The operation now includes multiple labels and grape-growing enterprises that reach throughout Central and Northern California. A facility in Paso Robles produces all red wines. The whites are still fermented and bottled at the Los Angeles winery in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels.

Our tour guide, Steve Riboli, vice president of San Antonio Winery, related a story about how recently three generations of an O.C. family came out on the Metrolink, as the station is within walking distance of the winery. “They bought so much wine afterward, we had to give them a ride to the train station.”

When you arrive at San Antonio Winery, you are enveloped by Old World ambience, and the heady fragrance of fresh oak hangs in the air.
