Kid Speak

Every month, we pose a thoughtful question to local schoolchildren to spark their wonderful imaginations. Here’s what we asked for July:

If you had been asked to design the American flag, how would you have done it?

“The bald eagle, with its wing tips set on fire, represents the strength and courage of America. The lush, green hills are full of nutrients and are oxygen-rich for farming. The rising sun forgets yesterday and gives a new opportunity for the new day. ‘E. Pluribus Unum’ is one of America’s mottos. It means ‘Out of Many, One.’” Joshua, 5th grade

“My flag represents the fruit of the years the 13 colonies obtained by diligent work. The USA is known as a land of opportunity.” Daniel, 5th grade

“The new flag represents power from the White House in Washington, D.C. People
elect a president who they want to run our country.” Alyssa, 2nd grade

“The bald eagle represents the country’s bird, the teepee where people used to live, the pueblos where the Native Americans lived. Native Americans are our ancestors, and the USA is where we live.” Megha, 5th grade

“The hand towards the middle of the picture shows that different races can be friends. Peace and unity means that people unite and can live in peace.” Skylar, 5th grade

“The 13 stripes symbolize our 13 colonies and red for the blood we shed to become independent. The 50 stars represent our 50 states. The blue represents our patriotism, and the star in the middle symbolizes America spreading our wings to new people, new ideas and new opportunity.” Emily, 5th grade

“The red stripe represents roses for our national flower, the blue stripe is for the sky, the purple stripe is for the purple mountains. The purple mountains represent the purple mountains’ majesty, and the 50 roses are for the 50 states.” Mira, 5th grade

“The hand represents everyone coming from all over the world to the United States of America.” Morgan, 3rd grade

“The red to me is like blood in wars. The map to me is, of course, the United States, but in a smaller version. The white to me is like freedom in the United States. The foundation in education is very important!”  Sarah, 6th grade

“My American flag has 50 stars that are in the sky to represent the 50 states. I put them in space to show our future in space.” Daryuish, 1st grade

“I picked the Liberty Bell because it is an important part of history to our country. The 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies. Thirty white stars are for the states. The red star is for America’s love. The yellow star is for America’s wisdom.” Aashna, 6th grade
