Kauai, the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands, is ancient, exotic and achingly beautiful. Known as “Hollywood’s tropical back lot,” it has been the location for films such as “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the first two “King Kongs,” all the “Jurassic Parks,” “Tropic Thunder” and the recently released “A Perfect Getaway.” When the script calls for a “mystical island” or “lush jungle,” film crews book flights to Kauai.
The Garden Isle is an amalgam of conflicting elements that come together to form one of the world’s most compelling creations. It is pastoral, yet developed. (Cell phone and WiFi reception were available from almost every location, services are plentiful and the roads are excellent.) It is luxurious, yet low-key, cozy yet diversified and untamed, yet safe.
Poipu Beach, on the south side, is the ideal year-round destination for all that Kauai has to offer. A surfer’s dream, it offers endless family-friendly fun. With beach rentals, boating, diving, snorkeling, zip-lining, kayaking and ATV exploring, there is a tour or activity sure to thrill every member of the family.
 Particularly beneficial for families is the highly organized network of rental properties that, for large groups in particular, can present a much more cost-effective option. Separate bedrooms, living areas and full kitchens provide more freedom and privacy than squeezing into a double room at a resort.
