![]() Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship ever built, set sail last December as the company’s flagship. It was designed to offer the epitome of full-service, comprehensive travel. Like other Royal Caribbean ships, family entertainment is placed at the highest priority on the Oasis of the Seas. Every staffer who works with children must hold a degree in education, recreation, child development or a related field. Children’s groups are broken down by age, starting with a fully staffed nursery for babies and toddlers. Adventure Ocean breaks groups up from ages 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 11. There are also two teen groups. Each section has its own state-of-the-art area with games and entertainment, in addition to organized activities coordinated by the ship’s staff. All children wear a wristband while onboard, which allows parents to locate their children from touch-screen directories located throughout the ship and in the staterooms. “The Oasis of the Seas represents a whole new dimension in travel,” says Jeff Abels, executive director of Orange County-based travel company TA2000 Inc. and SEACruises of Cerritos. “The newer generations of cruise ship is making it so the ship is the destination and the port is secondary.” So how big is the Oasis? > At 225,282 gross registered tons, it is the largest and most revolutionary cruise ship at sea. > It has seven themed “neighborhoods,” 24 dining options and 21 swimming pools and whirlpools. > It is 75 feet longer than the line’s previous class of ship. > It has the first zip-line – an 82-foot ride – on a cruise ship. The line is suspended above nine decks. The ship also has two FlowRider surfing simulators. > Its production of Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Hairspray” is the first full Broadway show performed aboard a cruise ship. > The AquaTheater, located on the stern of the ship, is the first-ever aquatic amphitheater on a cruise liner. OK, let’s stop here, because the AquaTheater is the most impressive entertainment venue I’ve ever seen. It offers a variety of water-themed shows and is a tremendous draw for those staying in the more affordable interior cabins. The Royal Caribbean’s promenade atrium-like design provides a view from interior stateroom balconies – a unique amenity for inside cabins – that have a box-seat view of the AquaTheater. The centerpiece of the venue is a pool on lifts that goes to a maximum depth of 17.9 feet, making it the deepest pool at sea. The elaborate shows include acrobatics, synchronized swimming, scuba divers and high-dive performances with Olympic-caliber talent. Because the pool is actually an elevator, the depth can vary at any given time, and the audience never knows what might occur next. Underwater cameras catch the action below the surface and display it onto two giant LED screens on either side of the center “sail,” which can also be used for projection and light shows. In addition, hundreds of individually lit water nozzles – some capable of shooting 65 feet high – can be choreographed to a variety of music and lights. The Oasis of the Seas offers everything you might want in a luxury or playground destination in a broad variety of activities to satisfy every generation. Throw in a few stunning Eastern and Western Caribbean ports, and you can’t possibly want for more. Dining options also cater to the tastes and moods of everyone in the family. Choose from anything casual, such as Johnny Rocket’s, to five-star luxury of the specialty restaurants, which require an additional fee. Whether you’re seeking plush luxury, relaxation, family fun, heart-pound activities or entertainment travel – or any combination thereof – Oasis of the Seas is the ultimate family vacation destination. seacruises.com |
