SOLUTION: Install a coat hook for each family member (even you!) at the appropriate height that will accommodate one backpack and one jacket. Consider Three by Three’s Triple Hook Up; it also magnetically holds notes and photos. $19, threebythree.com PROBLEM#2: Morning mayhem. SOLUTION: Set out labeled stackable storage crates or wire baskets – again one for each family member. Use it for collecting lunch boxes, library books, lunch money, movie rental returns, band instruments, etc. This way, stuff won’t clutter up the kitchen and everyone knows where to find his or her own belongings. Get as much organized and in each person’s bin before you go to bed. Most stylish solution: OFFI: Perf Boxes $299/stack of 2, modlivin.com, but any basket will do the trick. PROBLEM#3: Managing the flow of school papers. SOLUTION: Create a filing system that organizes papers based on their purpose, use and retrieval need. Create 4 files: 1. A Tickler File: Use for papers that require some type of action: permission slips to sign, dates to add to the calendar, papers to review. 2. A Yearly File: Create one for each child to hold progress reports, information about the current year’s programs, etc. At the end of the school year, theses files can be purged – some papers tossed and others kept. Papers that will be kept will be placed in the Reference or Memorabilia Files. 3. A Reference File: These files represent papers that need to be kept for reference or permanently, such as final year’s report card, awards, diplomas, medical forms and transcripts. 4. A Memorabilia File: These include your child’s treasured memorabilia artwork, writings and class picture. A good idea is to sit with each child at the end of the school year and select three to five favorite schoolwork pieces for that given year. If you select more than that, by the time your children reaches high school, it may be difficult to store. How? Yearly and reference files can be stored in hanging file folders and placed in file cabinets. Memorabilia files may be stored the same way or placed in storage containers that are archival safe and acid-free. ‘GONE TO CAMP’ Camps aren’t just for kids. There’s one this month for moms, too. Moms have the opportunity to receive some rest and rejuvenation by packing their bags and heading to Camp GetAway, a weekend retreat for women held in the mountains near Big Bear twice a year. Finally, a chance to “de-stress” and bond with fellow relaxation-seekers, and enjoy worthy pamper time. “ For nearly 48 hours nobody requires anything from them – nobody crying for a juice box, no business reports and no phone calls to answer,” says Camp GetAway owner Patti Londre. Picture yourself in a cabin up in the mountains breathing fresh air with no worries, no work or family responsibilities. Release tension with a massage, be creative at a scrapbooking workshop, hike to a waterfall, try out your archery skills, paddle in a canoe through a serene lake, party it up at the Friday night mixer or find out what’s the buzz in a “feminar” or seminar for females, ranging from relationships to health. “In all, women go home with a sense of balance, having some well-deserved ‘me time’ without breaking the bank or deserting the family,” says Londre. The next weekend getaway is Oct. 6-8 and the cost per camper is $295, plus modest fees for pampering spa treatments and craft supplies.
