BOOST: YOUR MOTIVATION A great way to get in shape is to sign up for a charity marathon or walkathon. Training with a specific goal in mind will increase your motivation, especially when it’s for a good cause (in addition to your own). Many major health-related foundations sponsor these types of events. Here are just a few: The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for The Cure is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, including the 60-mile, three-day walks in various cities across the country. Visit www.komen.org for details. The Joints in Motion Training Team will train you to run or walk a marathon, or hike a challenging trail to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. FREE YOUR MIND: Establish a morning ritual Best intentions aside, there are mornings when you barely have time to brush your teeth. But when you set a goal of a “morning ritual” for yourself it will not only improve the way you feel each day, but the way you look. The key is to nurture and nourish your body every morning. Find one ritual you can do each day before your household wakes up – drink a warm cup of water with lemon; step outside and look at the stars; take a warm bath in the morning – versus at night; turn washing your face into an invigorating mini facial massage to increase circulation and luminize skin. Try Kiss My Face Start Up Exfoliating Face Wash infused with lemongrass, organic herbs and green tea, $12; www.kissmyface.com. Start simple – your morning ritual is… It will soon become a gift you will look forward to each day.Problem Solved: Stylish entertaining sans the dishwasher Paper plates are so last season. But what does one do with these keepsakes? Rather than storing them in a shoebox or on a disc, more and more moms are turning their pictures into works of art. The craft, known as scrapbooking but often referred to as memory books, combines the usage of photo albums and scrapbooks. While the idea has been around for decades, the hobby didn’t take off until the mid-’90s and has been growing ever since. To get started, acquire supplies, such as scissors, paper, writing utensils, a paper trimmer and adhesives. Choose an album and pick out a theme, size and format to go with the selected pictures. Sketch a layout so you know exactly how you want the scrapbook to look, arrange the pictures and creative pieces together and do some journaling/storytelling about that moment in time around the photos. Scrapbooking classes offer lots of tips and ideas as well and are a fun way to meet other women, especially moms, who will bring some creative intellect to the whole process. Classes can go on into the wee hours of the next morning, so it is a lively and happening thing to take part in. Timeless Treasures in Rancho Santa Margarita, for example, holds scrapbooking workshops every Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m.-midnight for $10. (Call for information on themed classes, which are 12 hours long and can go until 4 a.m.). Scrappin’ In the Hills in Anaheim Hills is another option. – By Blake Frino Tips for staying job savvy Whether your youngest has just left for college or you’re simply looking to increase your income, transitioning back into the workplace after being a stay-at-home mom can be intimidating. In today’s fast-paced world, marketplace trends, technology and workplace environments are continually changing. Diana Walters, a volunteer career counselor at the Women’s Opportunities Center at UC Irvine Extension, offers five tips that can help you keep your skills sharp in preparing to re-enter the working world from home. 1 Stay abreast of the marketplace. Use classified ads or online resources to keep track of available jobs and the types of skills employers require. 2 Keep your resume as a living document. Constantly update your resume with your accomplishments, skills, and volunteer work so that you always have it on hand. 3 Network. Stay in touch with previous work colleagues who can provide you with references in your job search. 4 Volunteer. Keep a record of what you’ve done in specific volunteer situations. Translating volunteer work into a business vocabulary is beneficial to your resume. 5 Try to work part time. If you have time to work even one day a week through a temp agency, you can keep your skills updated and remain knowledgeable about the work environment. The Women’s Opportunities Center is a great resource for both men and women to receive one-on-one career counseling, help with resumes and interviewing skills, as well as jump-starting your job search, according to Walters.
