Activities that teach and bond
With so many things to do for the holiday season, it can be hard to find a moment to spend quality time together. Choose from this list of simple and quick activities to follow with your young child over the holidays and begin building special memories. Even better, these activities can help to develop skills your child will need when he or she enters kindergarten. • Borrow holiday books from the library and read stories together. Or just tell stories about things you remember doing when you were young. • Sing carols and other holiday songs together. It’s a great way to keep busy when you are stuck in holiday traffic. • Work on craft projects, such as picture frames made from Popsicle sticks or snowmen from cotton balls. They’re a great, inexpensive gift for family and friends. • Help your child draw pictures of his or her favorite holiday memories and stories, and display them around the house as decorations. • Invite children into the kitchen and let them help mix or measure ingredients, or decorate cookies and other holiday treats. Don’t forget to have fun! Messes are OK and cookies don’t have to turn out perfectly. • Make holiday cards or have children draw pictures to put in the cards. By including your children in holiday activities, you may find that you all feel less stressed. Plus, you are using the excitement of the season to make learning interesting for your child. Children love the lights, the stories, the songs and the overall feeling that comes with the holiday season, but most of all they love spending time with you!
