Keep them safe

By Tony DoderoPublished: February, 2010

It was one of those moments that could’ve made it on that old TV show, “Kids Say the Darndest Things.”

My daughter Kristen was sitting on my lap, and we were talking about the recent death of a pet or something.

She asked me why things die. She was only 5 or 6 at the time, so I did my best to explain to her that everything dies at some point.

“Even us?” she asked.

“Yes, honey, even us.”

She then looked up at me with these serious, big brown eyes and asked me one more question.

“Who’s going to kill us?”

I couldn’t help but laugh. And while my hope is that no one is going to kill us, I’m reminded all the time of the dangers my children face. So with Valentine’s Day coming up, I want to make sure the three loves of my life (besides my wife, of course) are kept safe, and I’d like to remind other parents to do the same, even as their children grow into teens and adults. The statistics show that the answer to Kristen’s question isn’t so much who is going to kill us, but what.

That sad reality recently hit home in our neighborhood. A young 21-year-old man was apparently killed after he fell into a creek bed that was roiling with water from recent rains. Most likely, no one will ever know exactly what happened to young James Wernke, but we do know the aspiring ball player left behind devastated parents, family and friends.

Tony, This reminds me of when my daughter was 3 and on a backyard swing and only 3ft.away.I turned for less that 3 seconds and she tried to grab for me,flew off the swing and banged her head on the ground and got a golf-ball sized knot on her noggin! It really is amazing how fast these things can happen!

Striking a balance is hard. But playing outside and walking to school are part of developing the awareness and judgement we need as adults. I see so many 20s who are afraid of their shadow, and any risks in the workplace, and I wonder if it has to do with 'oversheltering'. And yes, I walked the proverbial mile to school as a kindergartner in Anaheim.
