![]() My daughter Kristen was sitting on my lap, and we were talking about the recent death of a pet or something. She asked me why things die. She was only 5 or 6 at the time, so I did my best to explain to her that everything dies at some point. “Even us?” she asked. “Yes, honey, even us.” She then looked up at me with these serious, big brown eyes and asked me one more question. “Who’s going to kill us?” I couldn’t help but laugh. And while my hope is that no one is going to kill us, I’m reminded all the time of the dangers my children face. So with Valentine’s Day coming up, I want to make sure the three loves of my life (besides my wife, of course) are kept safe, and I’d like to remind other parents to do the same, even as their children grow into teens and adults. The statistics show that the answer to Kristen’s question isn’t so much who is going to kill us, but what. That sad reality recently hit home in our neighborhood. A young 21-year-old man was apparently killed after he fell into a creek bed that was roiling with water from recent rains. Most likely, no one will ever know exactly what happened to young James Wernke, but we do know the aspiring ball player left behind devastated parents, family and friends. NEXT PAGE >>> |
