![]() One year ago this month, I was given a gift. My employer of 18 years told me to pack my things and go. My services were no longer needed. I know, most people don’t consider a pink slip or a layoff notice something to rejoice over, but when I got that news, it changed my life forever – for the good. The reason? I got to stay home with my kids. To be sure, losing a job, especially when the economy is about to careen off a cliff, can be scary. But had I been gainfully employed, I would have missed so much. After I lost my job, my wife, Beth, a registered nurse, picked up more hours, and I started a whole new career as a stay-at-home dad. Most fathers, like me, just take for granted what Mom has to do each day to prepare the kids for school. First you need to wake them up, which can be a chore all by itself. Then you need to get their clothes ready, make their breakfast, make their lunch, see that they brush their teeth and their hair, round them up in the car and take them to school. The first two hours of the morning can be downright exhausting.Then, after a few hours of rest and downtime while they are at school, it’s time to pick them up. In my case, I have to park the car a few blocks away, hike over to the school and then deal with their social calendars and other details. “Dad, can I have a play date with Mica?” “Dad, can Savannah come over?” “Dad, will you carry my backpack?” NEXT PAGE >>> |
