Have you thought about who will do what and when? If you are lucky, you will have outside support. Siblings, in-laws and others are often part of the household, at least for those crucial first weeks. Have you established their respective roles? “Changes will be felt in all aspects of your life,” says Susan Kelsey, a licensed marriage and family therapist from Costa Mesa. “Knowing of these changes in advance can reduce the stress.” It’s not uncommon to experience raw emotions with a new baby, according to Kelsey. Try to anticipate negative reactions. Give yourself and your partner time to vent. Dad, especially with the first child, may feel unprepared or confused about his role. |
