Enchantment Galore

Talking bees and magic toy stores.

By David Dickstein Published: November, 2007

[dvds]this month

Deck the Halls (rated PG; available Nov. 6; ages 8 to 12): The cinematic equivalent of an unwanted yuletide fruitcake stars Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito as neighbors battling for the title of “King of Christmas.” Lame, stupid and embarrassing. Grade: D

Hairspray (rated PG; available Nov. 20; ages 12 to 18): Parents of pre-tweens might not want their kids exposed to its ’60s-circa sexually suggestive and racial content, but there’s no denying the high-energy music, dancing and cast will charm the bobby sox off your family. Grade: A

Ratatouille (rated G, available Nov. 6; ages 5 to 12): Remy’s dream of being a famous French chef is an improbability because, well, he’s a rat. His kind is unwelcome in restaurants, especially at the 5-star bistro. A family picture that really will please the entire family has such a sweet ending, I actually cried. Haven’t done that over a cartoon since, well, “Cars.” And before that “Finding Nemo.” Darn you, Pixar! Grade: A

Shrek the Third (PG, Nov. 13; ages 6 to 14): The wit and charm of the first 2 “Shrek” movies are missing. Unlike the weak story and writing, the actors are up to snuff, along with newcomer Justin Timberlake as Princess Fiona’s rebellious cousin Artie. Grade: C-

Enchanted
Opens Nov. 21, Rated PG
enchantedmovie.com

This fish-out-of-water fairytale finds a beautiful princess from a magical animated land banished to the gritty reality of modern-day Manhattan. The Big Apple is no place for Giselle (Amy Adams), but she does find love in a charmingly flawed divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey). But how can she live happily-ever-after with him if she has already promised her hand to a charming prince back home? More strife comes in the form of an evil queen (Susan Sarandon), but no doubt Disney will find a way to craft a happy ending.

[FOR AGES 8-14]

Bee Movie
Opens Nov. 2, Rated PG
beemovie.com

Jerry Seinfeld wrote himself the starring role in this CGI-animated feature about a bee who grows tired of making honey and leaves the hive. He breaks a third cardinal rule of the bee world by talking to a human (Renée Zellweger) and is shocked to learn from the quirky florist that we’ve been stealing and eating honey for centuries. The bee doesn’t retaliate with a sting, but a subpoena.

Fred Claus
Opens Nov. 9, Rated PG
fredclaus.net

Who knew that Santa Claus had a brother, let alone one worthy of the naughty list? This Christmas comedy stars Vince Vaughn as Fred Claus, the polar opposite of his saintly younger sibling Nicholas (Paul Giamatti). When Fred does a big “no-no,” the bro with the “ho ho ho” puts the bad seed through a rehab program. When things go sour in the North Pole, Santa has half a mind to deck not the halls with boughs of holly, but Fred with fists of fury.
