A bridge somewhere 11-year-old's speed does the talking By David Dickstein (For ages 9-14) Bridge to Terabithia Opens Feb. 16, Rated PG disney.go.com/disneypictures/terabithia The magical coming-of-age book by Katherine Paterson comes to cinematic life 35 years after winning the coveted Newbery Honor Award. The story follows an 11-year-old boy whose aspiration to be the fastest runner in his grade fizzles with the arrival of a new student, a girl no less. Despite the rivalry, Jess and Leslie become friends, and she ultimately opens up a fantasy world to him. In the land of Terabithia, mystical creatures roam and the two children rule as king and queen. Jess is played by Josh Hutcherson, who was terrific as the irritable big brother in the underappreciated space adventure "Zathura." Starring as Leslie is Anna Sophia Robb, best known as Violet Beauregarde in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and as Opal in "Because of Winn-Dixie." The Astronaut Farmer Opens Feb. 23, Rated PG theastronautfarmermovie.com As if ranchers don't already have it rough these days with animal diseases, unseasonable weather and an unstable economy, now a Texas cattleman is being harassed by the FBI, CIA, FAA, NASA and the Department of Homeland Security. Must have something to do with a rocket he's building in the barn and a purchase order for 10,000 pounds of high-grade fuel. Billy Bob Thornton plays a man whose life-long goal was to be an astronaut, but when a family situation forced him to drop out of the NASA training program, his career ended, though not the dream. Virginia Madsen, Bruce Dern and Tim Blake Nelson also star. David Dickstein is a regular contributor. |
