NEW DVD RELEASES ‘Shrek the Halls’ (ages 5-11, Nov. 4, not rated): Ornery as ever before Christmas, the new daddy ogre learns the true meaning of the season in this animated feature – a ratings smash when it debuted last fall on ABC. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return to voice their popular characters, adding to the familiarity and fun. Grade: B ‘WALL-E’ (ages 5 and up, Nov. 18, G): Man has long abandoned Earth, leaving behind one robot still collecting knick-knacks as he’s been programmed to do. WALL-E stumbles upon the key to the planet’s future, and he discovers love in EVE, a female robot sent from space. The movie shifts from brilliant and amazing to brilliant, amazing and exciting. Pixar has done it again. Grade: A+ ‘You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown’ (ages 5-10, not rated): Charlie Brown, contrary to the title, isn’t running for school president; Linus is. It’s a close race, but hanging chads aren’t what nearly undoes Linus’ campaign. This TV special wasn’t a blockbuster when it first aired in 1972, but it’s better than half the animated junk released these days. The DVD has a bonus feature from 2006, “He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown.” Grade: B- David Dickstein is a contributing writer. |
