‘Astro Boy’ Ages 4-10, released this month, PG An
impressive voice cast that includes Nicolas Cage, Scarlett Johansson
and Freddie Highmore couldn’t stop “Astro Boy” from crashing at the box
office last fall, but this robot boy adventure flies high enough to
watch at home. Grade: B
‘Daring Kids with Miriam Peskowitz’ Ages 5-10, released Feb. 9, not rated Learning
how to fish, play chess and build a bird feeder doesn’t sound much like
a dare, but that’s how this teacher, speaker and workshop leader
packages her low-budget, yet idea-inspiring, video that’s great for
families looking for weekend and rainy day activities. Grade: B+
‘The Hoobs: Hoobloads of Learning & Fun’ Ages 3-6, released Feb. 12, not rated This
children’s TV show from The Jim Henson Co. has become a cult favorite
in the U.K. since 2001 and is just now catching on in the U.S. Five
colorful creatures travel the universe to file entries in the
Hoobapaedia, an enormous reference database. Grade: B
‘LeapFrog: Math Adventure to the Moon’ Ages 2-6, released Feb. 9, not rated This
“edutaining” title sends preschoolers to the moon, while teaching
counting, sorting, adding and other early math skills. Older DVDs
feature LeapFrog character Tad covering language skills, and is just as
good. Grade: A
